Hi Dave,

If as you say dogs can or do cause as many if not more deaths than chemical warfare then i was wondering just when we will see toxin dropping dogs on the southern regions.

Also maybe the United States will consider invading Thailand as the threat they pose is larger than that of countries that have chemical weapons???.

Overall though i do agree that it is a problem here but as reported on the Bloomberg channel Thailand has just doubled its tourism budget to try and attract more tourists, maybe if they spent some of this large sum on the dog problem Thailand would be a better place.

By the way we were adopted by a soi dog that used to sleep outside 7/11 and without doubt she has been one of the best dogs we ever owned, and i am sure that many of us know Ice from london lounge.

It goes to show that with a little care and attention these dogs can be re-homed and make great pets.

Building buksi???. its nice and quiet where i am. :D

Mike.

Seems to me that the solution has already been found: (and only slightly off topic!)

Dave - sounds good
The best procedure would be to round all the strays up load them onto a fishing boat take them out to sea and toss them over board a few kms out from land and let nature do the rest (this is a monthly practice on Koh Samet which I have observed personally)
linktolinh - good stuff
if you have a dog you better treat it right, keep it inside or it'll go straight to the dog meat res!
One problem though - does salt water tenderise or ruin them?

MIKE theres a point i will mention it to him next time he comes for tea ....

Unusual for me Pete only being slightly off topic

also having tried the delicacy of our canine furry fiends ,don’t think unless you have a strong stomach you would savor the aroma of Shep cooking away in the pot

the boat idea stil seems best it is after all already a Thai tradition

as for ice he is treated beter than the adoptee treats himself,
thats why is he a healthy chappie

I have heard about the one way ferry tickets for Dogs but did not know if true or not. Seemes like a good idea. I believe that most dead waste in the sea gets condumed by parasites fairly quickly.

Lethal injection makes no sense at all. What do you do with the carcass.

I read about a scheme in Bangkok which I believe is already in place in some suburbs where they round up male dogs and castrate them.

What has to be pointed out is that the vast majority of dogs seen loose on the street are feral and are descended from many generations of feral dogs. I have seen little evidence of owners kicking out pets. If someone has bought a pet usally it is cared for. Also many people do adopt feral dogs, mostly successfully.

linktolinh ..you are in a very cruel society, but this is not home.. I am very sorry to hear about this occurrence it is harsh but inevitable this is a cruel and harsh country we are staying in..
Ok firstly I do care for our little canine friends but on the other hand if they are wild or infested I feel put them out of their pain and misery is better for all ,many will disagree, and what ever methods are put to use out side a veterinarian will be for most unacceptable from the western world, I have lived in places where these animals are top of the menu .maybe we are a little set to in our ways , and have never felt the real pains of hunger, maybe I am a little too customized to the ways here or I have lost all my sensitivity to what is happening around me due to the natural way the Thais take maters of every day life.
But As far as your question, the answer would be ensure the bag will sink by adding a weight cruel may it sound
As guess commented this is the way the Thais deal with these maters we have no say how it is done this is how it is done and will continue to be done and yes t does hurt the feelings, but this is not England or Europe or America
and i am quite sure the people who did this crime af putting a dog in a bag and throwing it the river did not read this forum
for sure. unless they are westerners lookig for a way to get rid of afew unwanted animals
this i could not believe
life is not a bed of roses

Dave, thanks for spelling it out...

Call me a woose but this is all too obscene for my canine loving western niceties....I love the wee b'stards.

If there's too many strays, and there are....I take it there's no local organisation that can round them up and offer alternatives? I appreciate the Thai way of dealing with these matters is purely pragmatic and makes total sense from a local veiwpoint. But is there any kind of organisation akin, for want of a better example, to the RSPCA, nationally or locally funded, that can look at alternatives?

Strays, if they're young enough, could make great pets. I'm sure there are a few resident farangs who, like me, would take in a youngster, rather than see it fall fate to what is IMHO a pretty horrendous end.

Appreciated that most local expats will probably disagree, but surely there's something that can be done on a local level?
Never trust a hippy....

Every Sunday in the Bangkok Post, Outlook Section is an article about stray dogs in Thailand and those people/organizations who care for them. There are photos of dogs that can be adopted and if I'm not mistaken, the artricles/photos/initiative for this is from the people who are running that dog shelter in HH. I recall that the issue a few weeks back mentioned them by name and the fact that they were trying to find a new spot of land to relocate the shelter to.

Here in Pattaya/Jomtien it's gotten much better than before. Hard to spot strays in the busy tourist areas but in outlying housing areas, there are still plenty. I think the Pattaya Mail had a story that the government here ships those caught to a very large government run shelter up near Saraburi somewhere. Pete

Not just the builders. How about the taxi drivers, street sellers, girls who block the entrance to Soi Selakarm whilst attempting to get you to eat at their grotty restaurant, drunken aggressive moronic farangs, horses, jelly fish, women drivers, teenage motorcyclists with racing mopeds, able bodied scroungers and alley cats.

Dogs and builders can be useful if treated correctly but be warned that you will always be cleaning up after them. It seems that neither can do it themselves.

hi dave, sorry so long replying had to go to work! All councils in uk, 8000 total. Didn't mean to do with money just stating that even in "animal loving " uk we still destroy a lot of dogs, even if it is humanly. Of topic but thanks for all the info on this site,we visited hua hin for first time in august and found it very friendly and reminiscent of thailand 10/12 years ago . Hope it keeps that special something.

Despite the efforts of the rescue center and irrespective of whether you are a dog luvver or not, there is a real problem with the number of homeless dogs wandering the streets of Hua Hin.

How about starting a poll on HHAD under the heading “Would you like to see HH Local Authority take positive action to reduce the number of homeless dogs wandering the streets of HH.â€
