yet to be watched later - RESERVOIR DOGS - no further words are needed.

Im also gonna watch METROPOLIS later - German early cinemas classic contribution to sci-fi. Dropped the original versions of THE GOLEM and THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI off YouTube last night and will line them up for a watch. I love the early German cinema horror thrillers.

On the cards later in the week will be an evening of "Arabian nights" style films with shed loads of Sinbad flicks and of course my all time fave in the genre the 1940s Sabu/Alexander Korda version of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD which Ive loved since being a kid.

Metropolis by Fritz Lang  We are nearly there are'nt we? Combine it with '1984' and it sums it all up really

Await your reviews SM. Always enjoyable and in tune with my thinking

Tonight I watched the 2001 Bruce Willis 'Bandits' movie which I'd forgotten about. Great spin at the end

I gotta say I agree with the critics. The first act is nothing but a tissue thin gung ho justification for the CIA black prison regime and torture camps, and its a damn shame as it does taint the rest of the film.
Try reading other critics. Finally saw the movie a few days ago. Since then conversations and chats with friends showed me they think the film supported whatever belief they had about enhanced interrogation before seeing the film.
sandman67 wrote: The biggest disappointment though is the actual end operation, which is IMHO filmed pretty poorly and in large parts just a murky mess.
IMHO: Bravo to the director for showing the SEAL's tactics - not Hollywood conventions. Bravo for letting the scene take 3/4 of the duration of the actual operation - and not cover just the salient points. Finally bravo for using cinematography to convey the restrictions of night vision goggles. All three decisions allowed the audience to suspend disbelief while working their way through an unknown building interior, knowing there would be armed people inside willing to fight to the death and that every minute on the ground increased the likelyhood of a strike against them from the outside.

my utter disrespect for the film stems from much more than is covered by the "critics". It is NOT, as it claims to be, a realistic representation of the process. It is in fact one of the least realistic representations of an intelligence led investigation I have ever sat through.

The CIA, like all American government orgs, is a lot more strict on conduct and regulations than any UK one - FACT. So, an intelligence operative like the female lead, who wigs out, swears at one of the Directors, and then quasi-bullies her boss by writing in marker on his office window would get put on suspension or sacked. Further, once she was found falling to bits in a weepy heap after her mate got blown up would be considered "tainted" and compromised, and thus re-assigned. FACT. I saw that happen to one of the best at the place I worked at - no matter how hot and reputed you are, once you are considered compromised emotionally that is that - you get reassigned. Once you are compromised all subsequent work you do on the case will be considered tainted, and the CIA do not roll like that.

Nobody, and I do mean nobody, has stuck lines of target photos on a wall since the 1980s. Why? Because its a blatant security breach. Everyone in that room or walking through it, no matter what their clearance level, can see the wall, so nobody does it any more, nor has since long before I started work in intell. There are programs and software that are used for associational intell mapping, and I know the ones the CIA use as I used the exact same programs, as do 99% of law enforcement and intell workers in all western orgs.

No intell operative, like the female lead, is a one man band. In the film she fulfills the roles of agent, surveillance op, intell analyst, profiler and an interrogator. All of those are separate disciplines, especially in a high end agency like the CIA. She is portrayed as some sort of real world James Bond. Utterly fake.

An intell agent would not, and never would, confirm a high level kill like at the end of the film. That would be done by experts. Looking at a corpse and making a judgement call is pure fantasy land nonsense.

That Homer is my take on it. Utter cliched unrealistic codswallop sold as a quasi historical timeline of the Osama investigation. Its crap wrapped in gilding, and that Bigelow is trying to sell it as otherwise cos some unsubstantiated "CIA sources" supposedly sold her that tale and she sucked it up hook line and sinker is all the more sad and stupid.

And the end is a fecking mess. If you want to see how to film a chaotic operation watch BLACK HAWK DOWN.

At least BODY OF LIES and the Jack Ryan / Tom Clancy flicks didnt claim to be accurate retellings of stuff....but are a lot closer to the truth than ZDT

GANGSTER SQUAD

I love American gangster films, especially ones set in the golden age of US crime from the 30s to the 50s. Films like MULHOLLAND FALLS, THE UNTOUCHABLES, LA CONFIDENTIAL, BLACK DAHLIA and PUBLIC ENEMIES are some of my favorite films. Thats why Im also a big big fan of BOARDWALK EMPIRE.

Anyways, GANGSTER SQUAD is like The Untouchables in LA in the late post war 40s. The bad boy Mickey Cohen, a staple character in Ellroy's LA Quartet tales, is at the peak of his power and sends his rival Jack Dragna for a dirt nap. The Chief of Police, sick of the corruption and bloodshed, has a tough nut sergeant with a reputation for breaking heads and taking no prisoners set up a covert off the books squad of men to take the Mickster down once and for all before he gets so big he cant be touched. No rules, no badges, and maximum damage are the rules of the squad, and when the gunsmoke clears, hopefully the good guys will be left standing.

Josh Brolin heads up an excellent ensemble cast, with Sean Penn playing his mean and psychotic nemesis the Mickster. Its dead out of the mold of The Untouchables, but packed full of thrills and spills, frantic gunfights, crazy chases, stealthy police ops, and lashed with that lovely LA 40s smoky gloss and glamor. Smooth as a sax solo and brutal as a brass knuckle sandwich..... man I wish they would make more like this.

An utter solid gold three cheers classic keeper all the way.

Out and about in a DVDRIP version that unfortunately comes via China and has annoying big print hard subs on the screen - give it a week or two and a keeper version sans subs will be around.

Watched 'The Possession' last night. Bad planning. Not the sort of movie to watch just before going to bed.

Has anybody reviewed it? Is the lead male part the same as the serial killer in No Country for Old Men

Watched The Legend Is Born IP Man yesterday afternoon.

The download took quite a while, but if you're into the other IP Man movies, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. The only downside is that the spoken language is not English, so you have to read sub-titles (which I hate, but will make an exception if the movie is good enough).

Don't know if this belong here, in Sports or Foo.

Here is 3m 30s of tribute to Bruce McLaren on the 50th anniversary of the McLaren Group company. Somebody needs to make the movie for which this short would be the trailer.

Just finished watching the restored version of Major Dundee, Sam Peckinpah's classic western, which included recently located missing footage.

It was great to see this American classic, as the legendary director intended.

Sushi Girl

A film in the style of Quentin Tarantino by a writer/director of little experience and less talent. He's short on original ideas too. Sushi Girl makes a film out of the major elements of Reservoir Dogs: jewel heist gone bad, extended torture, a Mexican standoff and members of the heist team don't play well together while they try and figure out what happened. There is one original element, hence the title. So why watch it? Mark Hamill (best known for playing Luke Skywalker) as a weak gay sadist and sometimes bad attempts to copy Tarantino are worth watching.

Low budget and it shows everywhere except the main set, just like Reservoir Dogs. Sushi Girl played a few minor film festivals, then went straight to DVD in the US and Canada.

Yep I did Richard - its waaay back in the thread.

Its a good film, but the first one was enough for me, despite me being a Donnie Yen fan.

I dont really dig modern martial arts flicks, and the story of the Ip Man type character is a pretty common one to "modern" martial arts biographies - Jet Li's FEARLESS and "Fong Sai Yuk" ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA series for example, the Korean flick FIGHTER IN THE WIND, etc etc.

I prefer my martial arts flicks in the "wu jia" fantasy style like 14 BLADES, SEVEN SWORDS, THE LOST BLADESMAN, SHADOWLESS SWORD, THE DUELLIST, SWORD IN THE MOON, CROUCHING TIGER, THE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS and even the real madass fully blown fantasy stuff like ZU WARRIORS and IRON MONKEY.

Anyway, Im swimming in the lovely warm waters of classic flicks still. Spent a very happy night last night with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and THE ENGLISH PATIENT and went to bed dreaming of the desert and empty spaces.

A mate is desperately trying to find "Commando" also known as "Legions Last Stand" staring Stewart Granger (1962). I have searched all the usual suspects but to no avail. I have found numerous Stewart Granger movies on YouTube, but not the one he wants. If anyone knows where this can be downloaded, please let me know.

Ta in advance.
