If you followed GN's excellent advice you should know which device (bit of hardware connected via USB) that is causing the error. Have you done this? It could be a mouse, external drive, flash drive, keyboard, USB hub or any other device you have connected to your USB connection.
If you uninstall a driver, when you reboot Windows should automatically search for the latest driver. I would be wary of doing this in case it doesn't recognize the device. Some devices have their own installation CD, which you may be missing. There are sites online which can scan your PC/laptop for hardware and tell you what devices you have and if they are up to date. This may be another option for you.
If you can't resolve the problem and would prefer help, take it to a computer shop or send me a pm and if you are close by I will come over and do it for you. It will cost you a bowl of Russian Borsch.

I tried all the above but my computer is still crashing. I'd like to contact you by PM but being a newbie this feature is not enabled for me yet.
Before I moved to Thailand I used to connect my laptop to my TV using the VGA cable to watch downloaded movies on my TV. I now want to do the same here plus subscribe to Thai Expat TV and watch programmes on my TV not my laptop.
I have connected the cable but all I get on the TV screen is the 'no signal' message.
As I am using the same laptop I presume my laptop settings are OK although a quick search of the internet yesterday did mention a certain resolution setting but as far as I am aware I haven't changed anything on my laptop.
Any ideas ?

Yes Mr P, it's a LG TV and the source is RGB PC but I tried them all anyway as the TV is wall mounted and I had to reach behind as it's quite high up on the wall and wired in so I could not lift it right off it's brackets, only swing it out a bit

Must have done something wrong as suddenly I'm getting this message on my laptop screen 'This copy of windows is not valid'. Well I knew it wasn't and have never allowed updates.
Now and again it prompts me to go on-line and validate it which I have ignored
What are the implications and what can I do please?

Yes BB it does but just looking at it now it is between 2 USB ports and the connector bit in the middle is damaged/bent. I have probably damaged it while trying to insert a USB whilst drunk!
Even so would I not have the same problem ?

OK BB, I didn't know what HDMI was, I used VGA before I came here as there was a VGA cable with my TV. After speaking with BarryS I have now bought a HDMI cable and managed to fit it to my laptops mangled connector and to my TV but still nothing but probably cos I have damaged the connector. So it's a visit to the repair shop tomorrow for a new HDMI connector on my laptop. I will update on any progress. Thanks.

Something has turned on the Windows Update feature. To get rid of the messages you need a piece of software called 'Remove WAT'.

Tried a few and seem to end up being led down the garden path. Avast turned off for the downloads and execution. Other problem is I do not subscribe to RaR

Update : Took my laptop to the lady in the little computer repair shop just off the canal road. For a new HDMI connector she needs to send it to Bkk, repair time one week minimum. I don't want to be without for a week at this moment in time so she connected my VGA cable to another PC and it worked without any adjustment to my settings. So back home and re connect to the TV via VGA - nothing !
So I tried adjusting the resolution settings from 1366 x 768 to 800 x 600 as recommended for the external monitor and it worked straight away !
So at least I can connect to the TV for now. Next time I am in the shopping mall I will ask on the 3rd floor if they can repair without sending it away.
So now to the broadband thread to see what provider is best.
