Bit of an old thread, but just called the fraud centre again to ensure my card didn't get blocked while down in Malaysia for a few days. As always they ask some security questions, but the one today was the best yet -
"If you're going to use a hairdresser, which province would you normally be in?"
That's a good un and made me laugh

Shouldn't have spoken so soon. Just went to the ATM and guess what? "Refer to issuing bank".
Trudged home and called them again. The amount I was trying to take out was 1,000 Baht above the daily limit allowed on my debit card. I tried 4 times, with lower amounts. Always the same message. The fraud centre explained that as the first amount was wrong, the card was immediately blocked :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:
Things should be sorted out now.

This of course is one of the advantages of using a UK bank account and atm card. I have had similar problems with the Halifax, coupled with the poor exchange rate and atm charges, oh and the cost of phone calls.

To be fair the Halifax did give me compensation of £200 last year.

Yes, I know I should have opened a Nationwide account.

I dont understand why people do not open a Thai bank account, and transfer money by TT and use an ATM card from that bank.
It has got to be less troublsome and cheaper.

I prefer to keep what little money I have back in the UK and spend it down on Penang. At least that's whats happening at the moment. Now then, can I get another Tiger beer before last orders?

UK Barclays Bank Customers

Post by margaretcarnes »

Guess - sorry I can't be a....d to plough through 9 pages right now, but back to your clearly well informed post at the beginning. I'm puzzled as to your comment about ' as long as the PIN is kept safe' etc. I thought that in the UK the problem, along with the cloning, has been concealed cameras at ATMs which record the PIN input along with stealing the card data? So surely in any country the only 'safe' transaction is from inside the bank (as folk in the UK are now advised to do.)
This of course naievly assumes that Thai banks are above corruption, and doesn't solve the problem of Barclays freezing cards at source.
What I do find very worrying is the thought of other banks following suit at the drop of a knicker leg, and without notice to customers. In LOS you do at least still have the good old pass book. Here in UK we still have cheque books - but an alarming number of retailers are now going chip 'n pin only and not taking cheques any more.

I know a lot of posters on here don't like me going on about The Nationwide. I've banked with them for well over 25 years, took their option on the internet banking, many years ago. I've lived here in Thailand for about six years and never had one problem withdrawing cash from ANY ATM.
Good rates and never one phonecall to the UK.
