Usually I'm not a big fan of armchair pundits but I think this time that there is unanimity regarding Kane and Sterling.

I thought Southgate must have been watching a different game hauling off Foden instead of Sterling.(much head scratching at that one)
Note to Mr S. There's a reason Sterling couldn't get into the Man City side this season, he's playing far below his undoubted ability.

I think I made the wise decision not to stay up until silly o’clock to watch the game, so just caught up on the highlights this morning (which can often give an unrepresentative view), but having watched the snippets, read your views and listened to the pundits, it’s fairly obvious that England had a poor game, with some individuals in particular (Kane and Sterling to name just 2).

Unless there’s a remarked improvement, we’ll struggle in the knockout stages.

Spurs fans may be happy though, because the way Kane has played in both games, the clubs that were supposedly chasing him may be having second thoughts, so he could be playing for them next season after all.

Yes, you made the correct decision. I don't think any player on either side broke a sweat, and it was more akin to old man's walking football.

Correct, Sterling was like the invisible man. However, Kane played as well as he always does - after all of the accolades he receives, even from this forum, I don't understand how people can criticise at that performance.

We still have to qualify for the knockout stages yet. Bottom of the table is just as real a possibility.

We know your views on Kane, however he has played well on and off for Spurs and also for England, but what is beyond doubt is that his last two performances have been near non-existent. It would take a brave man to drop him for the next game and I don’t think Southgate is brave, so we can only hope it’s “third time lucky”.

Fortunately it’s statistically impossible for England to finish bottom of their group, but if they lose against the CR then they could finish third - of course a Kane hat trick would dispense any such doubts!!

I have promised not to criticise Captain Harry, so won't. I accept him for what he is (I've never seen him play better than average, so he has an easy ride in this competition for me), so I will not be disappointed.

Yes, you are right about bottom place. I was thinking Scotland or Croatia could still get 4 points, but of course, they can't both get 4.

I got up at 2am to watch it with a couple of Scots pals and even they commented on how woeful Kane was.

Overrated I think is the word that came up several times.

His stats don't lie. Southgate has just managed to turn him into a donkey in the space of 2 games. In the World Cup he turned up against weaker teams in the group stages but didn't perform against better sides later. Hopefully he's just reversing that this time round.

It’s strange, he’s been either EPL top goal scorer or in the top three for the past 5 years - this year as well as top goal scorer he also got most assists - he won the Golden Boot at the last World Cup and yet here we are discussing his recent crap performances. He’s clearly not all bad, but he doesn’t have anywhere near the consistency (or overall ability) of say Ronaldo or Messi.

It's the worst couple of games I've seen him have to be honest. To be that ineffective in 2 games straight is bizarre for Harry. He looks well off the pace all of a sudden. Very poor individually but something in the set up certainly doesn't suit him.

Either way, I'm still in no doubt he'll play his part in this tournament. He'll come good.

One positive about the draw last night is we really don't want to win this group. The winner gets a prize of France, Germany or Portugal in the round of 16.

Second place gets Sweden, Slovakia, Spain or Poland. Another draw against the Czech Republic will do just fine, thanks.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, I think England may struggle against any of the “second rate” nations, unless there’s a miraculous turnaround - of course that’s what I’m hoping for, but history doesn’t give me too much confidence!!
