OK...as Richard suggested, a revisit to
BLACK DEATH
Set just after King Edward IIIs return from France with his army, and the plague the returning troops brought with them, this CADFAEL a like gothic little tale tells the story of a band of mercenary soldiers employed by the local bishop to investigate the claims of necromancy and witchcraft centered on a remote village out in the marshlands. The group are guided by a young novice monk who has a secret lover he has been protecting, and whose monastary is wracked by plague and famine. The group set off through the wilderness, dogged by bandits and infighting, only to find on reachng the village that it alone has not been infected by the plague, and appears under the control of a woman who claims supernatural powers. Is all as it first seems, or is there more to this story?
The cast is an ensemble cast of British A and B lister character actors, and each plays their characters to the fullest, foibles and failings to the max, from the gritty professional soldier and baron who leads the band to the monk riven by internal conflict and doubts. The settings are beautifully realised, both wild and empty, and muddy and grubby. The gore is minimal, special effects sparse, and allows the viewer instead to concentrate on the story, which has a devilish twist in its tail at the end. Where the Hollywood flick SEASON OF THE WITCH needed buckets of fancy CGI to tell a tale, this instead relies on the skills of the actors and the complexity of the plotlines. Both are excellent flicks, but of the two BLACK DEATH is the better one. To me it is the mark of a better film when you dont need to go see the guys at LucasArts CGI mill to make a film good.
Its an excellent bit of gothic chiller medieval whodunnit drama, beautifully filmed, wonderfully scripted, and well acted by all concerned. The plot loops at the end are standout, and the films last act is a brilliant way to end the film. Stands nobly side by side with the equally wonderful film adaptation of Umberto Eco's The Name Of The Rose
Definitely a three "God Wills It!!!" solid gold keeper.
Not only out and about all over the shop, but also has been aired in a somewhat lightly edited format on True Movies so may just re-appear in the post Xmas recycler lineup.
RE THE HOBBIT
Like many a Tolkien fanboy I am literally in a froth about this .... cant wait to treat my eyes to more lovliness from Weta.... however, that said:
Peter Jackson is really taking the piss. He has split the story into another three film epic. Consider the fact that The Hobbit is Tolkiens shortest novel, and about one third the length of the shortest of the three Lord of the Rings books. Talk about flogging that golden goose featherless.
I also will NOT be going to the cinema to see it, nor will I be out buying the first cycle release of the DVD. Why? Because its bloody obvious that just like the three DVDs of LOTR there will be a much extended "Collecters Edition" released sometime in summer or autumn of 2013, so Mr Jackson can frick off till then. However, Hobbit will be one of the very rare examples of Sandy trogging off to a DVD shop to buy the proper official disk. Actually, I will get a mate in the UK to send me the disk, as you will have feck all chance of buying the extended Collecters Edition version here in Thailand.
That all said, Im damn sure that Jackson will, just like the LOTR adaptation, make a masterpiece of cinema from the story, and one I will count as a treasured DVD set.
And while Im also sure that Jackson, Weta et al will get well awarded Oscars etc for the films, I think he should also win a special Oscar for "Urinal Extraction and Cynical Marketing".

I know I keep harping on about the cinema, and this thread is about downloads, but the trailer they show in the cinema is really great - the song they play is something else, I really can't wait to see it. In this instance, you'd need some really top class TV equipment to re-create the eerie ambiance that you will get in the cinema - I really hope Hua Hin play it in English.BaaBaa. wrote:The Hobbit ads look great SM and I've seen nothing but reviews.

No idea yet. Information is available for most cinemas, and about 90% are showing it in English and 3D. All I can find for Hua Hin so far is, "No showtime available"

Dont get me wrong lads....like I said Im all of a froth in anticipation of this no doubt masterpiece of epic fantasy film making. He may (I would disagree though with you on this) have made a hash of King Kong (I loved his version)
BUT
to turn Tolkiens tiny tale of the Hobbit into a three flick series the same as the whole LOTR saga is IMHO urinal extraction and cynical cashing in of Oscar winning proportions. I also will bet my right leg on the fact he will pull the same "Collectors Edition" malarkey with the DVDs, and each will be released six months later as a much extended version.
As to downloading it....well there is feck all point with a film like this dropping a shitty CAM version, or a marginally better TS version. Even a R5 wont do....you need the full visual and sound experience with a flick like this.
No...till the BDRIP or DVDRIP comes out I can wait.
As to your chances of seeing it at the HH cinema.... the same one that we all complain about cos the asshat who runs it only shows western films with a thai soundtrack......

They honestly aren't as bad as we all like to make out. Actually 2 movies showing with original western soundtrack at the moment. Agree, it is frustrating sometimes e.g. The Dark Knight Rises was only shown in Thai
richard says he doesn't like the cinema, but I can sit very comfortably with my huge bulk. It's clean, air conditioned - I'd really like to know what it is lacking.
Maybe he wants a lady walking up and down the aisle selling ice cream
