Re: Movies on DVD

Post by GLCQuantum »

Watched that 'Snow White and the Huntsman' last night. I thought it was a cracking movie with lots of delicious special effects and ghastly creepy crawlies. A very well done take on the 'Snow White' story. Many pieces of the original story are thrown into the movie but in a different way. You've got the dwarves. You've got the bad apple. You've got the pleasant animal friends of Snow White. You've got the mirror... but they are all not as you remember them.

Shame the second one (if there is a second one) won't have Kristen Stewart in it. I thought she did a bloody good job but she just had to get it on with the director now didn't she. :D

Anywho well worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN:VAMPIRE HUNTER

Ive been waiting for this one to come out for a while, and whilst it isnt a proper duck, on occasions you can hear it going quack. I dont know what it is thats off with the film - the actor playing Lincoln isnt up to much for a start off, and the film just isnt as grand a romp as it could have been.

The film takes the rise of Lincoln, the Civil War etc and gives that period of history a sub plot of a wicked race of vampires that have preyed on the US since the colonial days, and make the mistake of killng young Abe's mom. Thereafter his two passions are emancipation and chopping vamps into cubes with his woodsmans axe.

Its very CGI heavy, and looks lovely in bits, but in others is a murky mess of overly dark muddy colours. The thrills and spills are there, but too few and far between. And the guy playing Lincoln sucks.

So, as its a genre I love its a keeper, but it scores a mere 2 cheers. Out and about in DVDRIP formats.

sandman67 wrote:Big releases are pretty thin on the ground at the mo, so Im ending up watching a lot of smaller budget releases, most of which are just dross. But occasionally a reasonable one comes along like

THE DEVILS BUSINESS.

Bruno, a right bad un East End villun, sends a couple of his boys around to pop a slug into the noggin of some posh git who has pissed him off. Mr Pinner, the jaded Northern Irish assassin, is lumped with the dopey football hooligan wannabe hardman Colin as his second man, and while they are waiting for their mark to come home from the opera they get to talking. It also seems that the posh git is not as squeaky clean as would be expected, and seems to be an up and coming Aliester Crowley type. So when the mark does finally get home, things start to go very titsy very fast.

Its only just over an hour long and made with a titchy budget, so more like a creepy TV play than a Hollywood slasher flick, and the chills are mainly down to the actors and the story line, which is actually quite frippin good. An example is that while they are waiting Mr Pinner begins to tell Colin a gothic tale of the worst hit he had to do...and it totally sucks you in. The actor playing Pinner is great..and the way he tells the story really does have you hanging on every word. Yes the end gets a bit cliched, and I can think of a couple of much better endings they could have used, but there y go. It still works wonderfully all the same, and is a little gem IMHO.

Well worth a watch IMHO and gets two hearty cheers for effort and Mr Pinners creepy tale within a tale.

Out and about in DVDRIPS at all the usual places.

REALLY ENJOYED IT but not the sort you watch before going to bed

Fortress

As usual, foul language blights what might have been a good yarn. Never heard it in the 'Dambusters' or 'The Great Escape'. Now you can't find a sentence without it. Some nice visuals but yet another film leaving you asking... 'Was that it?'

Bubblegum entertainment.

The City of Your Final Destination

Not quite 'Remains of The Day' but nevertheless, different to the base, blood-splatter, charnel-house type of films Hollywood churns out normally.

No offence to those who enjoy watching two men kissing but the fast-forward button was called into action a couple of times. I know I'm supposed to be modern and progressive and PC but do I really need to see Anthony Hopkins slapping a lip-lock on his buddy? Nearly choked on my popcorn. Despite this bit of Hollywood social engineering, the film is worth an hour or two.

Interesting storyline, with mixed acting. The wet Omar Metwally and the even wetter Charlotte Gainsbourg are not good enough to carry this film. Predictable feel-good ending.

Against a pervasive anti-Iranian media backdrop, in the media in general, it was curious that the male lead came from Tehran. Little else was mentioned about it except for a verse from a Persian poet. If they were trying to make a point, it wasn't clear.

A few I watched on the plane.

Prometheus. Very good but a bit underwhelming after the hype, same with Avengers.

I wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed the new Spiderman, Andrew Garfield is brilliant (as he is in The Social Network)

Best film I watched is the classic Little Miss Sunshine.

Just this minute finished it.
I agree, but I'd leave off the 'very'.

I agree, sort of. 2/3rds of it was very good, 1/3 was pretty bad, so that averages out to good.

Have still not come across a decent copy of "The Dark Knight Rises" - anybody been more fortunate?

Also, looks like Danial Craig's latest outing as 007 is going to be well worth a look. Some solid reviews for "Skyfall" across the net.

Turns out to be wobbly, distorted, handheld crap.
20 or so effusive comments from people saying how much they enjoyed it.
Presumably all blind.

Next month should be better. I'll wait for the DVD rips now.

Charlize Theron give it favourable scores.
