Is a yellow card time clock in sync with the play clock, or does it run separately regardless if the play clock is moving or not? Pete

It's in sync with the "match play" clock.

But bizarrely (and I think I'm right here), if a player is binned shortly before halftime, his card time stops at 40 mins irrespective of how much added time is played. I've never understood that logic.

Not 100% sure you're correct there DM, but something I'd need to check.

Whilst doing a quick Google search, I came across this - a useful point of reference: -

^^^ From the RFU (Laws@rfu.com)

"Hi Peter
The yellow card is ten minutes of playing time, not running clock. So a player sin binned after 38 minutes without extra time would have 8 minutes of sin bin in the second half. "

^^That still doesn't make sense to me. So 3-4 minutes 'in the red' before the final stoppage in play is not 'playing time'? Or am I misinterpreting what's written?

^ To be honest, I'm still a little unsure!! Surely, time added on is still "Playing Time".... but his answer is not clear. I've gone back to him to clarify.

Damn you Pete! You really cause problems!! :D

Jonah Lomu died this morning unexpectedly, age 40. Very sad. :(

He's had kidney disease for 20 years +- and on dialysis for 10 years after a kidney transplant that went bad. His kidney problems is what shortened his rugby career IMO. The aforementioned I got from BBC news this morning and may well be in the Guardian article as well. I haven't read it yet. I would think his kidneys will be determined as the cause in due course. There's a documentary out and being shown on Setanta the past month about his trip back to SAF and meeting up with the old Springboks he played against, and meeting local kids. He didn't look well at all in that film and more like 55 than 40. He also had a grouping of huge cysts on his arm. I think he may have been unwell for a long time. :( Pete

Very, very sad news, though he has been ill with chronic kidney disease for many years - which obviously curtailed his playing career. A great player in his day and the '95 RWC being the highlight for many including myself - especially when he ran over Mike Catt and Tony Underwood...... not to mention making Will Carling look somewhat "un-special"!! :D  :duck:

Indeed, he was also a great ambassador for the game, but what wasn't mentioned in the report is the fact that having his Welsh agent Phil Kingsley Jones, he played many games and appeared in many charity events for small club sides in Wales and was wonderful for "grass-roots rugby". I was lucky enough to meet him once in Cardiff but have never felt so small!!

A wonderful player and person who gave a great deal of time to the sport, people and charity. He'll be sadly missed.

R.I.P. Big Guy...
