It’s statistical data regarding the lifecycle of phones - I don’t think anyone was telling you one thing or another!!

That's the truth. I think I'm on year 5 or 6 with mine now. Older folks aren't working so no need to make a lot of business calls and communications, and they aren't burning it up watching YouTube, TicTok, Facebook. The screens are too small to watch movies, so it basically turns into a talking device and news reader once again.

Believe me, there's always a reason. The guy didn't just wake up one morning and think, wow, I think I'll write a huge paper on the life of a phone, including how much I'll buy perfectly good phones for, and hopefully sell a shit load more phones in the process. It is a brainwashing article. Nothing more, nothing less.Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2024 11:11 am It’s statistical data regarding the lifecycle of phones - I don’t think anyone was telling you one thing or another!!

I wonder how many have read that, exchanged their perfectly good phone in for $7, and bought a brand new phone, which will serve them no better than the phone they've just sold for $7.

A lot of people also have a lot of money to spend and choose to buy new and expensive phones for no other reason than to show off they can afford it, together with all the other status symbol itemssuch as cars, clothes etc etc etc. And if they have this much money what are we to say what they do with it or not???

Well we’re all entitled to our opinions and isn’t it great that we don’t have to agree with each otherBig Boy wrote:Believe me, there's always a reason. Re: Which Mobile Phone?
That's very true. The expensive phones I posted above were in a shop in the centre of Luxembourg city and by the time you have walked past the windows of Rolex, Cartier, Gucci, Omega, Breitling, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, etc, you might think 2,000 euros for an iphone 15 is the best deal you've seen all day!huahin4ever wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2024 12:23 pm A lot of people also have a lot of money to spend and choose to buy new and expensive phones for no other reason than to show off they can afford it, together with all the other status symbol itemssuch as cars, clothes etc etc etc. And if they have this much money what are we to say what they do with it or not???

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
The new device is finally set up after a couple of days of messing around, its never easy as you have to log back into all finance-related apps again and mess around with two SIM cards and phone numbers, and both devices.
The biggest issue was the Google account being maxed out. If you have Google Backup switched on, it will take every single photo, screenshot, video, file or attachment sent to you on various messenger platforms, document, and email, and upload a copy of them to your Google Drive, which will rapidly fill up ... then it asks you for money to upgrade.
There is no way to batch delete photos from it so I've been painstakingly going back and finding photos that date from 2014 on Google Drive (no wonder the 15GB is maxed out). The drive is still 85% full, mainly photos, but it functions now, so I've disabled the auto backup on the new device and will do it manually from now on to a separate Google account.
Now its time to factory reset the old phone and pass it on.

Is the world and the youth of the world coming full circle? I hope so! Phone calls, email and music. Battery that lasts 2 weeks, and a phone the cost of a tank of gas.
Adults and teens turn to 'dumbphones' to cut screen time
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c7227njm45eo
Adults and teens concerned about their screen time are turning in their smartphones for “dumber” models.
Buried in the settings of many smartphones is the option to look up how much on average you are staring at your phone per day.
It can bring an uncomfortable realisation, that what was supposed to be a useful piece of technology has become an obsession.
“Social media is built around FOMO (fear of missing out), so I felt like I couldn’t get off it,” 16-year-old Luke Martin, from Canada, told the BBC.
“Instantly I got Instagram and it was a downward spiral.”
Luke is not alone.
According to a study by Harvard University, using social networking sites lights up the same part of the brain that is also triggered when taking an addictive substance. This has raised concerns about phone habits among youth.
In the UK, research by Ofcom estimates that around a quarter of children aged five to seven years old now have their own smartphone.
Links have been shown in some studies between use of social media and a negative effect on mental health - especially in children.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
As some will have seen, I have just replaced my 8 year old phone with a newer model because it no longer supported some apps because of it status.
My needs are simple, so I most definitely wasn't looking for anything top of the range. I basically wanted to replace like with like, but with an up to date operating system. I chose the Galaxy A15 5G 128Gb (which was a considerable upgrade to my old phone, but as basic as they come these days).
Following several blatant rip-off attempts by some of the local phone retailers, I have an inbuilt fear of using them - they obviously see the MUG tattoo on my forehead. I told my DIL what model I wanted (or something similar), the Lazada price (7,999฿) and sent her down to MV to buy one.
When she went to MV, she didn't bother with the little shops, but straight to Samsung. She told them what she wanted, and talked them down to the Lazada price.
The Samsung team then took my old phone, and literally transferred everything across as part of the service. What a brilliant job they did. They even added K+ as an app. Apps such as viewing my security cameras just worked, with no manipulation. Automated transfer of photos from my phone to my laptop, just work. I honestly couldn't see the join. The service was truly excellent. I've seen others buy phones at the little shops or online via the likes of Lazada, and they are setting their new toys up for days. Using the Samsung shop, truly saved me a lot of time and most likely screaming at my phone. I'd definitely recommend them if upgrading from Samsung to Samsung. Of course, some will enjoy the nausea of setting up a new phone

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
"things like that" being me saying 1gb RAM and 16GB storage being unusable for just about anyone
you objected profusely in other repiles
so you, or the rest of your family, didnt fancy the 1gb RAM phone then after all?!
anyway you did the right thing sending your DIL to get you a phone and not yourself
Re: Which Mobile Phone?
My old phone was still functioning perfectly apart from firstly not supporting a compass application, and then a banking application. If it wasn't for the fact I need to pay a hefty bill very soon, my old phone would still be doing a sterling job for me.
Upgrading my phone was the best way forward, when considering all bill payment options. However, I will most likely pay that bill, and with the exception of knowing which way to drive when starting a journey, the new phone will have no advantage whatsoever over the old phone.
Yes, I've worked with IT long enough to realise things become outdated, and need upgrading, but people who change their phone every year because it's the latest model simply wind me up. I still can't see why people do it, other than to make phone companies rich. The fact my phone was 8 years old, support my philosophy - if its not broken, don't fix it. I've never checked the RAM on my old phone, but it was obviously sufficient for my needs.
I had already decided not to upgrade, and find another way to pay the bill without having to carry cash, but my DIL returned from Isaan at a very fortunate time. I am just very grateful that the Samsung shop have managed to make the new phone look exactly like the old phone. Only one app that they transferred failed - sofascore. With that I simply uninstalled and re-installed.
With the exception of mobile banking, I was never left wanting when out with people with top of the range phones. Yes, of course their phones could do a lot more than my phone (no argument), but most people don't know how to use that extra functionality.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
These days, a phone is a computer; if you only need it to send/receive messages and check footie scores, then your 8-year-old chugger will do.
However, others have greater needs, and phones are now used for finance, banking, payments, trading, gaming, video calling, photography, music, TV, navigation, travel, shopping, social media, etc., so a better spec is necessary for heavy users (just as it is for a laptop for those that want it for more than just email and checking Farcebook).
I've also never gone for top-end phones and found mid-range devices to have enough hardware oomph for my needs and last a good 3-4 years before the software security or battery life becomes an issue. I only replaced my last one after three years because my son wanted it so got something similar again (just more RAM, storage, and latest OS). I also don't get those that spend 40K on the latest iPhart but I suspect it is more for 'show' than functionality.
