The biggest mystery for me is not that Kane stayed on for as long as he did, it's not that Southgate couldn't see that one of Rice or Phillips had to be replaced, nor that for 90 minutes James had no-one in front of him to pass to. Nope, none of that. The biggest mystery to me is how Sterling not only re-appeared for the 2nd half, but completed the full 90 minutes, when he was utterly useless throughout.
Foden can play Sterling's role better than Sterling. As it stands, anyone can do Kanes role better than Kane, I think the other Harry has to come in for Mings. Rice or Phillips? Just one is needed. As Souness said, 'two peas from the same pod'. Grealish was as ineffective as everyone else when he came on. Rashford had too little time, tragically, Gilmour isn't English (but is Chelsea

) and Southgates limitations are coming to the fore again.
All the ridiculous hype after the first game has been exposed fot what it is and well done to Scotland and David Moyes, who got the game spot on in his review, including the statement that, 'England weren't that good in the first game', a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with.
We have a huge amount of flair and ability in this England team, it needs to be set free. It would be a start if Kane and Sterling sat out the next game.
