What is it with wet markets, especially seafood wet markets? There's a significant clue in there IMO about how this virus operates.

Covid outbreak closes Ayutthaya shrimp market

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... imp-market

AYUTTHAYA: The Central Shrimp Market in Ayutthaya has been ordered closed until Sunday after at least 17 people were believed to have contracted Covid-19 from people working there.

Health officials will conduct coronavirus tests at the market on Sunday, targeting some 300 people who work there. All shops and stalls there will be closed for the day, said the provincial administration organisation, which supervises the site.

Several trucks were deployed on Saturday to spray disinfectant at the shrimp market, which covers more than 10 rai in tambon Hantra of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, said Chatchai Kittichai, leader of the Ayutthaya volunteer team.

Local authorities and operators of more than 100 shops sought help from the team to clean up the market and spray disinfectant, he said.... (Continued at link)

Death toll tops 100 as Thailand logs 1,767 Covid cases, new record

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... new-record

Thailand on Sunday recorded yet another daily record number of Covid-19 cases -- 1,767 -- bringing the accumulated number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 42,352. Two new deaths were reported, raising the toll to 101.

All but two of the new cases were contracted inside the country.

The two additional deaths pushed the toll in Thailand past 100. Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin said one of the fatalities was a 54-year-old monk who suffered from multiple diseases and tested positive for the novel coronavirus after he died last Monday in Bangkok. The other death was of a woman, 70, who tested positive when she was admitted to a hospital last Monday. She died on Saturday.

The new transmissions were concentrated in six provinces, led by Bangkok with 347 cases. The others were Chon Buri (229), Chiang Mai (164), Nonthaburi (100), Prachuap Khiri Khan (66) and Samut Prakan (64). The new cases in Chon Buri and Samut Prakan were more than double those logged on Saturday.

The accumulated number of patients since the third wave of the virus largely spawned in nightspots early this month has now reached 13,489, most of them in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and other central provinces.

Dr Taweesilp singled out a new cluster at a private school in Samut Prakan as a particular worry. The hotspot was apparently sparked by two foreign teachers who visited entertainment venues in Phuket on April 2-4. They returned to teach and supervise examinations at the school from April 5-8, and then attended a farewell party on April 8 before testing positive for Covid-19 the next day. Subsequent tests at the school detected the virus in 23 students and four of their family members.

The two imported cases were recent arrivals from Pakistan and Canada.
More provinces join travel restrictions

Thailand’s third wave of Covid-19 has now reached all 77 provinces. The Interior Ministry said 44 provinces have now imposed restrictions on new arrivals in an attempt to contain the spread.

Huge reduction in the number of cases under investigation, from well over 300 to only 40 in a day and as before, they will disappear into the ether and only be counted if entering hospital.

They should also just count figures for the Greater Bkk area and not count neighbouring provinces separately. Many Bangkokians will live nearer to their neighbours than to other area of Bkk. Even the BTS now runs to Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi, which are counted separately.

But the other side of that is that there are about 220 more actual, confirmed cases.

Yes, but they never say whether they are previously counted PUI's, now confirmed, or only newly discovered cases.

Thailand adds 3 deaths, 1,390 Covid cases Monday

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ses-monday

The government on Monday recorded three additional Covid-19 fatalities and 1,394 new infections, all but six transmitted inside Thailand. The kingdom has now logged 104 coronavirus deaths and 43,742 cases since the start of the pandemic in January 2020.

Monday's tally was significantly lower than the record-high 1,767 new cases recorded on Sunday, although whether it is the start of a downward trend remains to be seen.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the new deaths included a 56-year-old man who died in Prakhon Chai district of Buri Ram on Sunday. He had worked in a bar near Nana in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok before returning to his home province during the Songkran holiday.

Another death was of an 84-year-old woman who died on Friday, with records showing she was in contact with her grandson who worked at a nightspot on Ratchadaphisek Road and was infected with the virus.

The third fatality was a woman, 61, who died on Sunday after testing positive for the novel coronavirus at a hospital in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The new confirmed infections on Monday included 1,384 local transmissions and six imported cases. It was the first time in three days that the number dropped below the 1,500 mark. The country registered 1,543 case on Thursday, 1,582 on Friday and 1,547 on Saturday and 1,767 on Sunday.

Bangkok saw cases drop to 293 from 346 on Saturday, while new transmissions in Chon Buri plunged to 98 from 229. In Chiang Mai, however, cases rose from 164to 197, according to CCSA figures.

CCSA assistant spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson called on people to keep their guard up as the drop was not necessarily the start of a downward trend. "High number will come back if we are complacent," she said.

Authorities were banking on travel restrictions and the work-from-home policy amid concerns that Covid-19 could spike after infected people visited their families during the Thai New Year period. Ms Apisamai pointed to the death of the man in Buri Ram on Sunday as a warning.

“It is vital is to limit movement," she said.

The Public Health Ministry hopes the restrictions will lower the spread of the virus next month.

By comparison with Thailand's 1,390 new cases on Monday, India on Sunday recorded 275,306 new cases, the United States 43,174 and Brazil 42,937, according to Worldometers.

Among Southeast Asian nations, Myanmar officially logged nine new cases, Cambodia 618, Malaysia 2,195, Indonesia 4,585 and Philippines 10,098. Sunday's new caseload worldwide was 709,437.

More people around the world were diagnosed with the coronavirus during the past seven days than any other week since the virus emerged, topping 5.2 million globally, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The worst outbreaks are gaining speed in many countries that are ill-equipped to cope.

The data also showed a 12% increase in cases from a week earlier, throwing doubt on hopes that the end of the pandemic is in sight.

As I understand it the HH death is a 61 year old woman who ate with someone already confirmed as covid positive. Whether she knew is unclear. She had underlying health problems: diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid.
