OMG, what has happened to the air quality? Yesterday and today my wife has had both air purifiers running full power just to keep the air quality inside the (closed) house acceptable.

Looking at other parts of Thailand, the quality has gone purple.

Hua hin hasn't been great the last couple of days according to AQI. Numbers early this morning were all 150+ with one at black mountain over 180, but they have now settled down.

Thailand on fire – NASA satellite website tracks the country’s farm fires

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/environ ... farm-fires

Thailand is burning. The burning off of harvested crop plantations is lighting up the agricultural areas. The truth is starkly revealed in the live NASA satellite feeds which track the fires around the world.

Concentrations of the current fires can be seen in Central Thailand, north of Bangkok, parts of Isaan, north east of Bangkok, and around Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Notably the concentration of fires in northern Cambodia and across the north-western border in Myanmar, is also causing plenty of problems as the foreign smoke drifts across the borders. No matter what Thai officials do to enforce the rice, sugar and corn plantation burn-offs, there is little they can do about the haze drifting across the borders.

Bangkok, so close to clusters of fires, is in for a bad air pollution day anytime the light winds of the start of the year blow from the north or the east. The lack of rain adds to the problem, the annual problem, that engulfs Thailand’s capital during days between December and April, with the worst month, statistically, being March.

The alternative method of preparing for the next harvest, mechanical removal of the refuse and waste after harvesting, is both unpopular in Thailand and economically unviable for the small farmers whose margins remain thin with the multi-national buyers of their produce pushing for lower and lower prices every year.

In Chiang Mai, from January to the end of March, the locals even call it the ‘burning season’. Coupled with the hot season, the farmers in northern Thailand burn their fields to prepare land for the next harvest and also to get rid of biowastes like corn that can’t be sold in the market. It’s officially illegal to do the burn offs but the lack of enforcement leaves the problem unresolved and the smog and haze remain as predictable as the annual wet season.

Chiang Mai also has a local geographic problem which exacerbates the bad smoke pollution. The city is in a valley, surrounded by hills, trapping in the smoke and helping block any breezes that could otherwise blow it away.

For today, Bangkok’s air pollution is better than the past two days but still registering as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ with city readings mostly between 140 – 170. Parts of the city, mostly south-east and south west, were registering readings above 300 in the past few days.

Air levels unsafe in 19 provinces

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30402186

Air pollution in 19 provinces hit unsafe levels on Wednesday morning, the Pollution Control Department reported.

Thailand’s standard for safe levels of PM2.5 (particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter) is 50μg/m3 or below.

The 19 provinces are Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Lampang, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lopburi, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Chachoengsao, Ratchaburi, Chon Buri and Rayong.

Here are some details as of Wednesday morning:

North: PM2.5 readings coming in at 17 to 68 μg/m3.Northeast: 16 to 38 μg/m3.

Central region and West: 42 to 62 μg/m3.East: 47 to 65 μg/m3.South: 11 to 29 μg/m3.

Bangkok and its vicinity: 39 to 80 μg/m3.

People in areas where PM2.5 pollution is bad, especially the elderly, children, and patients with respiratory diseases, have been advised to monitor their health and reduce time spent on outdoor activities.

The PM2.5 situation can be followed on Air4Thai.com and bangkokairquality.com websites, or via Air4Thai and AirBKK smartphone applications.

Prachuabkhirikhan and Phetchaburi should be in that list as well. Probably others too.

I thought the air in Hua Hin today was 'moderate'. With ozone being the biggest problem?

Yeah, better today. Pm2.5 over 50 last few days. Take a look at the hills and you can see the smog.

Chiang Mai '3rd most polluted city' (In the World!)

Chiang Mai was ranked as the third most air-polluted city in the world on Wednesday, with an average PM2.5 dust level higher than 200.

The northern province is battling with a critical level of air pollution due to wildfire smoke, with the average amount of PM2.5 exceeding the safe level at all four air quality monitoring stations in the municipal area on Wednesday.

An air quality monitoring station in tambon Suthep of Muang district reported PM2.5 of 102 µg/m3 -- the highest amount of all four stations.

On the website of AirVisual, Chiang Mai was ranked the third most polluted in the world as of 11am on Wednesday, after Lahor in Pakistan and New Delhi in India.

Some 928 hotspots were detected across 17 northern provinces on Wednesday morning, according to deputy commander of the 3rd Army Region Maj Gen Thanadpol Kosaisewee, who is the deputy chief of a command tackling air pollution problems in the region.

In Tak, PM2.5 and PM10 exceeded the safe level for four consecutive days, affecting people's health and road visibility.

On Wednesday, PM2.5 and PM10 in the province were measured at 114 and 171 µg/m3 -- above health-hazard levels -- in Mae Sot district. People were told to avoid all outdoor activities and stay away from areas with high air pollution.

Tak governor Pongrat Piromrat said the province had laid out measures to prevent forest fires and prohibit burning for two months starting from March 1. Those who burned in forests or were found to carry hunting equipment would be charged by forest patrol officers, the governor warned.

Director-General of the Department of Health Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen said the tropical storms from March 1-4 in the upper part of the country would help reduce PM2.5 in Bangkok and its vicinity, the Central Plains, the East and the lower North from March 5-7.

However, some areas in the North, the Central Plains and the Northeast might experience more air pollution due to outdoor burning in the country and smoke from neighbouring countries, he said.

The doctor advised people to protect themselves by wearing a face mask every time they venture outside and keep abreast of the air pollution situation on the official website and application of the Department of Pollution Control.

I must say, I have to drive to and from Black Mountain every Tuesday and Thursday. The view of the mountains has been very clear here this week.

I've also noticed the readings on my wife's air purifiers very low. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.

Chiang Mai the most polluted city on earth

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... y-on-earth

Chiang Mai on Tuesday received the most undesirable accolade of becoming the most polluted city on the planet.

The grim news from the IQ AirVisual air monitoring website came as authorities revealed that the situation had caused 30,000 people to go to hospital because of respiratory illnesses over the last three months.

The Chiang Mai provincial public health office said 31,788 patients suffering from air pollution-related illnesses from January to March 5 this year, said Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen, director-general of the Department of Health under public health ministry.

Chiang Mai's air quality has been ranked one of the planet's three worst cities for pollution since the start of March.

Then, IQ AirVisual on Tuesday announced that the city had in fact been the very worst place in the world for many straight days with a USAQI of 195, followed by Beijing on 182.

USAQI is an Air Quality Index used by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).

Tuesday's morning, the level of PM2.5 in Chiang Mai rose above 200 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m3), according to IQ AirVisual and the Thailand Pollution Control Department (PCD)'s air monitoring station gave similar findings.

At noon, the level of PM2.5 recorded at Chang Puek road in Muang district rose to almost 200 µg/m3.

Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) on Tuesday warned the air pollution would last for another week.

That is because the southern west wind current would be too weak to blow away the dust particles and these were trapped by the cool weather in the evenings.

The main contributor of the deteriorating situation in the North is said to be the considerable heat from wildfires caused by open burning in Myanmar forests and locally.

The northern region on Tuesday had 926 hotspots, 617 in protected areas and and 293 in reserved forests. Mae Hong Son had the most hotspots at 442, followed by Chiang Mai at 211 and Tak 108.

Wildfires and haze in the upper North has started to impact people's health in six provinces: Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Tak and Phayao.

Deputy commander of the Third Army Area, Maj Gen Thanadpol Kosaisewee, said a taskforce responsible for controlling wildfires and haze in the northern region had deployed 60 patrol officers to five districts in Chiang Mai from Tuesday until tomorrow.

The 35th Ranger Forces Regiment has also deployed 35 rangers to extinguish wildfires on Phrabat Mountain in Lampang province.

Hua Hin air quality has been Good for over a year. But yesterday evening it turned Moderate and this morning IQAir has the air quality index in the 60s. The screenshot below from the Windy app shows PM2.5 centered around Bangkok. It can only get worse as the population gets back to work.

I most certainly wouldn't say 'over a year', but yes, Mrs BB has her air purifiers turned on again at the moment.
