Watched last night's press conference from the WHO. Much more sober and informative. Social distancing by the panel and reporters on a link.
One of the questions inevitably was the use of masks. They doubled down on the general public not to wear masks. They refused to criticise countries that are promoting the use of masks. "There is absolutely no evidence that the wearing of masks can protect the wearer.(unless you're in the front line and exposed to the virus constantly). Quite the opposite. There is strong evidence that wearing a mask can increase the spread of the virus. There is a benefit psychologically and socially but that's the only benefit. A mask will protect others from an infected person"

Interesting fact sheet from the Johns Hopkins Hospital:

* The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes the genetic code of the cells (mutation) and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells.
* Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.
* The virus is very fragile; The only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy because the foam CUTS the FAT (which is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam when washing your hands). By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.
* HEAT melts fat; This is why it is so good to use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything. Additionally, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.
* Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.
* Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.
* Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.
* NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES TO KILL THE VIRUS! Viruses are not a living organisms like bacteria; Antibodies cannot kill what is not alive.
* NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While glued to a porous surface, a virus is very inert and disintegrates at different rates depending on the surface:
-between 3 hours (fabric and porous),
-4 hours (copper and wood)
-24 hours (cardboard),
- 42 hours (metal) and
-72 hours (plastic).
But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.
* The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars.
* Viruses also need moisture and especially darkness to stay stable;Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade them faster.
* UV LIGHT on any object that may contain a virus breaks down the virus’ protein, thereby disinfecting the surface. Be careful, as it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin.
* The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.
* Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.
* NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve as disinfectants against viruses. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%.
* LISTERINE can work as It is 65% alcohol.
* The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.
* You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And, of course, when using the bathroom.
* You have to moisturize dry hands from so much washing, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.
* Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

Appreciate that nearly everybody is trying to help and keep each other safe, but from the list above I just Goggled one of the items - using Listerine. The manufacturers (Johnson and Johnson) state that it should not be used - not all of their products contain alcohol and even those that do have a maximum of just 20%, so little/no protection against the virus. Stay safe.

Yes, I've noticed that already, unless I'm getting eczema from the stress! I've started using hand lotion...

The original 'gold' Listerine has 26.9% Ethanol. I think that fact sheet I posted confuses ABV with 'proof'.

Not all Listerine contains alcohol however.

Still a great product that was originally sold as a floor cleaner!!

To be fair, it does qualify that as 'shaking clothes', or a feather duster etc. Basically making it airborne from an already infected surface.

Normally, the virus would be carried in a droplet and quite quickly sink to a suitable surface.

That would be excellent if they opened a bar where you could sit and have a beer while someone else does your shopping for you!!

The old shopping mall, yesterday 30/03, had lots of sanitizing gel ranging from pocket size to 1 litre and alcohol hand spray.

I think everyone knows my thoughts on the use of masks, backed up by doctors and scientists around the world. It's known that the best prevention against this virus is social distancing (2 metres) and almost fanatical cleaning of your hands. It's understood that the virus can only enter your body through your mouth, nose and eyes and this is most commonly transmitted by touching your face.
Most places now have sanitiser available on entry. I use sanitiser when going into a premise and again on leaving. Where there is none I use my own which I'm never without. On arriving home, I use soap and water before doing anything else.
Yesterday afternoon, I went into my local 7/11, using the sanitiser and keeping my distance like always.
After leaving I decided to spend 15 mins just watching people going in and out. Most Thais were wearing masks. But in those 15 mins, NOT ONE person used the sanitiser and were certainly not practicing 'social distancing'.
I've said it before that people here are quite obsessive about using a mask. Because of the push from the government and retail outlets etc banning people not wearing a mask, people actually believe that a mask is the be all and end all of keeping yourself safe. It's become the number one priority in safety procedures.
Somehow the emphasis has to be shifted towards hand washing and social distancing. Until people realise that, it's not going to get better.
Now the government has classified used masks as 'hazardous material' which need to be disposed of in special red bins, once again highlighting the importance of a mask.

Are there still golf courses that are open? Are the restaurants in the top hotels still open? Please keep answers related to Hua Hin, for other Corona virus comments there are enough other threads running.
