Look at these ones many times Pete, but think it's only you and myself plus one or two others who would ever go for it. Will start a pool anyway and see what happens......prcscct wrote:Look at Superbru Pharvey as Championship coming up next month. Go ahead and start a pool if you want. Pete

Re: The Rugby Thread
Living in "Cloud Cuckoo Land"....
Can fully understand trying to promote the game with a few international matches, but trying to tie in an American side to the Pro 12 - lunacy. The logistics of trying to do so would be mindblowing.... it has to be a wind-up, surely???
Guinness Pro12 Chiefs in Talks About Bringing in an AMERICAN Team to Boost Revenue
"The Celtic and Italian competition is still maligned in some quarters but now organisers are looking at a radical way of shaking it up.
Talks are underway about setting up a team in the USA to compete in an expanded Guinness Pro12.
America is seen as a potentially lucrative market in terms of broadcasting and sponsorship, amid a drive to generate more revenue from the league.
Rugby is growing in popularity in the States, with a new domestic league having been established, while the All Blacks’ primary sponsor AIG have created an annual fixture in Chicago.
A record 61,500 fans watched New Zealand take on the USA Eagles at Soldier Field in 2014, while Ireland will play the world champions there in November.
An Aviva Premiership match was taken to New York last season, with London Irish facing Saracens in front of a 15,000 crowd at the Red Bull Arena.
So the feeling is this could be an opportune moment for the Pro12 to tap into the burgeoning US market in an attempt to compete financially with the English and French leagues."

I think the Highlanders will take the Lions...but a 50/50 bet at the moment. The Lions are strong. Pete

Re: The Rugby Thread
Certainly looking forward to the Lions vs Highlanders game - should be a cracker!
As for your comments re: weather/wind, can't remember if it was the '91 or '99 RWC in the UK, but there was one game where the team was kicking off and the ball blowing back over their heads!
Absolutely crazy conditions. The match would normally have been cancelled, but RWC time, TV rights, schedules and money prevail......

Re: The Rugby Thread
Some positive ideas, however we've been here before and nothing ever seems to come of it - at least not without discussions and bickering over a number of years between the relative unions and also "Club/Region vs Country".
I do however always pray for a positive outcome quickly!!
Six Nations Revamp 'Up for Grabs' Amid 'Unsustainable' Season
"Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chairman Gareth Davies believes a Six Nations revamp is "up for grabs" when tournament organisers meet this summer.
The Six Nations' annual start could move from February to April with bonus points and promotion and relegation being introduced.
Davies says the current demands on players are "unsustainable", prompting talks over a "global season".
He says the WRU held "discussions" with New Zealand in June over the issue.
Recently installed World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said moving the Six Nations to April "could be a solution" in a global calendar.
The idea was on the agenda in 2003 amid concerns over fixture overlaps and clashes between clubs and countries.
In 2014 the Rugby Players' Association, representing players in England, urged changes to the playing calendar for the sake of player welfare.
Davies witnessed Wales' 18-Test season ending in a 3-0 whitewash against the All Blacks in June, a year after preparations for the 2015 World Cup started.
"The main reason for the global season is player welfare, to try to cut down the numbers of games players are playing," Davies told BBC Radio Wales.
"Our guys were in New Zealand in June, July. They started training the first week of June the previous year.
"The New Zealand guys couldn't get over it. These guys had been going for 13 months playing international rugby - that is not sustainable.
"And it was a World Cup year and exceptional year etc, finishing with the New Zealand tour."
For southern hemisphere teams, hosting rivals from the northern hemisphere also disrupts their Super Rugby domestic tournament calendar.
Davies added: "Basically they want us to move a month or so so they can have a clear run-in."

Re: The Rugby Thread
^ Sorry the above bad info concerning Lions vs Highlanders. It was a cut/paste from the Super XV Rugby website. It seems the game started about 90 minutes earlier. I didn't see it and will have to catch it on replay.
In any event the Highlanders are no more, and I understand it's the first time in Super XV Rugby that a NZ team lost a semi-final. The Hurricanes vs Chiefs game was unimpressive, although the Hurricanes defense was extremely strong.
So, next weekend it's the Hurricanes vs Lions final in New Zealand. Time to be advised later. Pete

The match is starting now, in monsoon rain and wind unfortunately. Should be interesting, and the result will be the side who can best cope with the horrible elements. Pete

Re: The Rugby Thread
The Hurricanes took it 20-3. A lot of penalties by the Hurricanes, and a lot of loss of possession, mainly due to a wet ball and field. Incredibly strong defense by the Hurricanes, they haven't allowed a try for something like the last 300 minutes of play. Watch the Lions next season, they'll be back even stronger and the NZ teams will have their work cut out for them. As for the Hurricanes, with players like Barrett, Coles, Perenara and so many others at their peak, they've been virtually unbeatable.
There's rumblings that the Super 15 (18) may not survive. I hope idle rumours only. Pete
