Hua Hin beach cleanup: Day 1

http://www.bangkokpost.com/most-recent/ ... anup-day-1

Twenty-two food vendors whose stalls encroached on Hua Hin beach began dismantling their illegal structures on Monday as authorities launched a campaign to return the beach to its natural beauty and ensure fair food prices.

The vendors started to pull down their stalls and pack up cooking equipment in the morning. Soldiers and city cleaners helped them remove large items such as framework and refrigerators.

Vendors on the famous beach of Hua Hin have refused to move out after being told to do so by Prachuab Khirikhan authorities, in line with the beach clean-up plan.

Hua Hin governor Vera Sriwatanatrakul said he would explain to the vendors the plan of the National Council for Peace and Order to reorganize busy tourist beaches nationwide in a bid to attract more foreign tourists.

According to the governor, Prachuab Khirikhan's Hua Hin beach has long been encroached on by a number of vendors and resort owners, who have illegally built their own facilities right on the beach, which have become an eyesore. The province needs to move all the vendors to designated places close to the beach and start cleaning up the beach and improving the landscape.

"Hotel association believes junta's beach crackdown will lure tourists back"

Image
"Soldiers carry away canvas beach recliners as part of the process of restoring order at Hua Hin beach."

"More major tourist destinations such as Pattaya and Bang Saen in Chon Buri, the city of Chiang Mai, Koh Samui in Surat Thani, Koh Chang in Trat and other popular beaches in the South need to restore their image and also get rid of local mafia gangs," Prakit Chinamourphong, ex-president of the Thai Hotels Association, said yesterday.

The tourism image has been damaged for years by local people through scamming. A lot of tourists were also cheated, and that sullied the country's reputation, he said.

The THA and key travel associations including the Association of Thai Travel Agents and Domestic Travel Association have called on the Tourism Ministry to crack down on the mafia at destinations for many years but nothing was achieved because of interference from local politicians and businesses.

However, when the NCPO moved to clean up management and organise several places such as Patong beach in Phuket and Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan, their tourism images immediately turned beautiful, he claimed.

"Patong beach now seems more beautiful than beaches in Hawaii in the US, while Hua Hin has now become more upmarket and looks costly," Prakit said.

Earlier, the Tourism Council of Thailand asked the junta to reappoint the National Tourism Policy Committee to deal with tough situations as well as to solve problems at tourist attractions nationwide.

The body has been inactive since the military took control of the government in May.

The Tourism Council also asked the military to continue rebuilding the country's tourism image and also restore tourists' confidence. Some of the urgent problems needing to be fixed are illegal taxis, tourist scams and non-standard operators at beaches.

The Thai Hotels Association and the Tourism Council recently proposed tourism recovery plans for short and long terms to the junta in order to help revive the economy. The private sector has also asked officials to boost security and safety measures for visitors and also promote domestic tourism. Many tourists are returning to the country ahead of the peak season beginning in October. Chinese tourists are pouring into Thailand this week, just after visa fees were waived for them, he added."

It will be costly, to get lunch on the beach you'll now have to go to a five-star hotel. I'll go to Cha Am instead and hope they leave that a bit more local!

Certainly as of yesterday, Cha Am beach was business as usual.

That's good enough to keep riff raff like me off of Hua Hin's beaches then.

Seems all these initiatives (beach clearing, visa controls, wheel clamping, bars shutting on time etc) are happening nationally and no doubt are being perceived as improvements from the world wide media. 'So there is stability now in Thailand so it's a good place to invest in or to go for a holiday'..Right?

From a personal point of view I'm happy with the way things are going. Having recently returned from the UK with it's 'PC/big brother' environment Thailand is a free, relaxing pleasant environment to live in providing you obey the law and keep your nose clean IMO.

I don't think we should forget too that Hua Hin will get more media focus and more attention because of it's special situation. Need I say more?

Maybe that the grand plan. The big picture. Turn HH into a Capri, Sorrento type of place. Only for the wealthy who reside in upmarket hotels and resorts.

Under the hammer soon I hear. Mind you, I've been hearing that for years now but as they have already cleared out the pier and I think it was posted earlier, money is set aside for renovation of the pier, I don't think it long before the whole strip to the Hilton is replaced
