English Provisional --> Thai motorbike licence exchange?

An English Provisional licence, in conjunction with a CBT (compulsory basic training) certificate, allows you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc with L-Plates - no passengers.

Does anybody know if a British provisional licence can be traded here for a Thai motorbike licence, or would one have to do the full test?

My logic says no - they may issue a driving licence if you can show you've passed a test, but if you haven't, then you would need to sit the test the same as you would in your home country........ But then again TIT!!

I know that the police generally don't know the difference between a provisional and a full licence, but maybe the licence centres are a little better informed?

Although it was 12 years ago, I took my International Licence and my UK licence to Pranburi. When they pointed out that there was no permission to drive a motorcycle, I pointed them to the provisional section. The result was that I got two licences - one for a car and one for a motorbike. This was before any compulsory tests and I was in and out in 30 mins. Since then, when I've renewed my licence, I've never had to sit any tests and the renewal is automatic.

A tip:- I always apply for a renewal, a week or so after my birthday. The new licence is 5 years from your next birthday which gives you almost 6 years!!

The test is easy, so don't worry. Just takes a little time.

You could do this years ago but not today, you have to take the Thai test if you want a Thai license.

The test can't be difficult - my son passed his Thai test before he could properly ride his bike. Problem is you have to give up a day and a half of your time.

I passed the Thai multiple choice, I wouldn't say it was easy. I was shocked I passed as I thought most of the right answers I gave were just the best answers out of 4 wrong ones.

It may not be difficult but, as BB points out, it's a two day process and the interested party is rather short on free time.
