Re: The Car Challenge
I think that the car posted by hhfarang is a bit of a Heinz. All 57 varieties
or maybe no 58! It was well ahead of its time. I remember it from a car museum visited one long weekend several years ago.... Over to the experts.

Re: The Car Challenge
That's ok, mine is a tough one. Hint: it was to be an "ahead of it's time" production car (in limited numbers due to its cost) but due to the designer's untimely death, the one in the photo was the only one ever made.
It had a supercharged V8 engine, 190 horsepower, and could go 115 miles per hour. The prototype cost nearly $400,000 in today's adjusted for inflation dollars. It was quite ahead of it's time as it seated 6, had front wheel drive, and a sunroof of interchangeable metal and glass inserts over the driver and front passenger seats...
The interior:
Here's a photo of the rear which will give you an idea of the year it was built...

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: The Car Challenge
Yes, I thought it was early forties by the streamlining and I presume from the plate it's 1938.Here's a photo of the rear which will give you an idea of the year it was built...
Re: The Car Challenge
Can we use Google? I think I have it
I got it through one of you clues, but will not reveal anything unless "Google permission" given
I hope someone else gets it before, without Google, as I can't post again for 24hours

I think that's the only likely way it will be identified, being such a rare car - I too have identified it, courtesy of Mr GoogleSiani wrote:Can we use Google? I think I have itI got it through one of you clues, but will not reveal anything unless "Google permission" given

Yes google is ok on a rarity like this. I'm not trying to hog the thread, but thought this was an amazing car for the time. I'm curious how you used google to find it... an image search?... or by one of the clues such as the year, price and only one built?

Rare American car built in 1938 was how I did it.hhfarang wrote:Yes google is ok on a rarity like this. I'm not trying to hog the thread, but thought this was an amazing car for the time. If you want to put everybody out of their misery and move onto the next challenge, it's a Phantom Corsair. Bristolian obviously found it earlier with his reference to Heinz 57 - it was in fact designed by Rust Heinz of the famous H J Heinz family.
Re: The Car Challenge
I think bristolian got it at the top of the page when he mentioned heinz 57. I got it by google usa car designer death 1938 then search images. Good one, amazing design.

Re: The Car Challenge
I didn't look it up, I remembered seeing the car in Reno some years ago. I had a weekend to waste on a business trip and someone suggested the car museum. The shape is very distinctive but i would never have remembered the name without looking it up.Dannie Boy wrote:Rare American car built in 1938 was how I did it.hhfarang wrote:Yes google is ok on a rarity like this. Re: The Car Challenge
It's from the same era as the Lamborghini Jalpa and Miura and the Ferrari Daytona ?
It seems very familiar but I can't put my finger on it yet.
Is it an odd Italian?

Re: The Car Challenge
I accidentally found it while looking for a German sports car of the same era.
Now I know why it's familiar, a chap who lived down the road from us had one but not this model, he had a later model with big square tail lights above the bumper. I didn't even know they made an earlier model. It was a nice car, he also had a Fiat X1/9 which rarely worked either.
I'll leave it for the others. Suffice to say, it so obvious once you know what it is.

It's quite rare in the UK. Apparently just 6 registered on the road, so I was told...in the UK that isFrank Hovis wrote:I accidentally found it while looking for a German sports car of the same era.
