Not bad, certainly not the best of the new ones IMO

Nice acting from the usual and Albert Finney plus the baddie played a better part than he did in 'No country for old men'

Plot crap too

OK as a download. Wouldn't pay for it

ENJOY
Watched it at the cinema last night. Are you sure that you downloaded a copy of Skyfall? By far the best Bond movie yet, with a storyline that was almost believable. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yes, my wife, daughter and eldest grand daughter are going today. Unfortunately, it's in Thai over here at the moment. (This should probably be in the Hua Hin Cinema thread  ).

One question Pete. My youngest grand daughter (7 yo) would love to go as well, but the movie is a 15+. How does your wife get your daughter into the movie? At Skyfall (13+) there were a couple of 4 year olds watching it, but when I was buying our tickets yesterday, I saw a girl (about 9) refused a ticket to Twilight. How does the classification system work?

Stay tuned, she's in the shower at the moment. She may not know that about 15+. In pattaya one of the screens has it in Thai and another in English throughout the day. Seems they have enough screens to split things like that. Reverting........Pete

Ok, just got back from upstairs. Gave me an excuse to sneak in and turn the hot water on in the basin while she was rinsing her hair in the shower. Her Sunday morning scream is in perfect tone!

She says younger kids can get in to any movie if accompanied by an adult. They're going to give it a try. Will report if success when home this evening. Pete

I can tell you one screen it will never be played on....mine

Anyways.....

SINISTER

This thriller chiller is, IMHO, another re-working of the RING plot - an evil entity who spreads itself through the use of film and images, although to keep it fresh there are a raft of new throw in plot hooks that keep it fresh.

Ethan Hawke plays a washed up true crme writer who, after peaking early, is giving it one last stab at making a name and money by writing a book about a bizarre family mass murder. He move his family into the victims old house, only to find that the victims seem to have left more than a scene of crime behind. Up in the loft is a box with a projector and a set of old Super 8 films, each showing what appears to be a similar mass murder, although in each case the murder is done differently. Two things link the films - each crime documented has one of the kids going missing, and in each film there is a shadowy figure watching in the background. As the writer digs deeper, the true story emerges.....

I think its pretty well done, setting aside the usual horror film common sense fails. The film style is very clever, keeping almost all the gore off screen, (in the same way they do in 8MM) and the superb soundtrack helps to add a growing feeling of unease and discomfort. Hawke plays it excellently as the ever more obsessive writer whose investigations lead to his slow downfall. There are some jump shocks that work as well so beware watching while holding a cup of hot coffee

Out and about in R5 DVDRIPS.....my recc is wait till proper full on western DVDRIPS come out so you get the best of the soundtrack - should be around next week or so.

Three cheers for a chiller with style.

Three that I caught on just about watchable CAM versions that leaked into YouTube - in each case Id recc waiting for the DVDRIPS cos the quality was awful to just about watchable

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

After loosing Mrs Dracula to an angry mob of villagers the Count sets up a retirement home come holiday retreat for monsters where he can offer his guests safety and protection. It also means he can keep his daughter safe away from humankind. And all goes well till one day a lost tourist stumbles across the castle, falls for his daughter, and may just scare all the guests away.

Good cartoon fun for all the family and full of sly references to the classic age of B&W Universal horror films. Will look absolutely lovely in DVDRIP format, and will be a three cheers IGOR like keeper all the way.

SILENT HILL: REVELATIONS

Fifteen years have passed since the last film, and through the use of an arcane seal the mother from the first film has managed to send her daughter back into the real world from the ash and death of the "dark world" of Silent Hill. Since then she has been on the run with her father, constantly moving to avoid being captured by the crazy cultists. Now they capture the father, and take him back to Silent Hill, where the daughter has to follow to set him free, and face her demon nemesis in the flesh.

Like the original its beautifully captured, with the dark world full of orribleness and decay. However, the plot is weaker than the first, and this just feels like watching someone play a walkthrough of one of the games - its as linear as a ruler. The end is also a cop out. It also shamelessly sets up the third installment, which pray is better than this one.

Two cheers for effort, a watcher it is, but a keeper? Hmmmmmmm

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand finally

RED DAWN

You know the basics, as this is a remake of the classic Regan era propoganda cackfest that just on sheer hamminess has become a cult classic. The enemy invadng the USA in this remake has been replaced with the totally ridiculous N Koreans, and that if anything is the main criticism. It was originally meant to be China, which would at least be credible, but N Korea???? The country that gave the world nukes on SCUDs? And they compound the stupidity with making teh Russians the support act, despite the fact Russia despises N Korea. Guess the studio execs thought maybe this would sell in China......hmmmmm.

Anyway, if anything this is more watchable than the original, and plays more like a straight acton flck, albeit one in a Chuck Norris mould. There is less cloyingly sickly moms apple pie to choke on, and less hammy hamminess, but its still as daft as a bag of spanners. Worth a watch, gets a cheer for effort, but its a trashcan flick of the first stamp. Drop it, watch it, bin it.

All three are currently doing the rounds in crappy CAM versions so at the mo avoid all three and wait for the DVD releases, as in the case of all three you will loose out on the film if you watch one of the CAM versions.

Chn chin chaps

Here are a few but I can't tell you how good they are as I've not used them myself. You need to register I think.

Watched it at the cinema last night. As you say, forget the base storyline, which was unbelievable, and take the movie for what it really is, it was quite entertaining - very few dull moments. Mind, it did go about 1 minute too long at the end, with a bit of a Sylvester Stallone moment of everybody rallying around the stars & stripes - not necessary (not an anti-American comment - just an anti-movie comment),

MrP

If you or the kids can type in Thai I recommend you take a sift through YouTube. Use a set of quote marks to isolate the name of the film you are looking for, then you use the filter bar options below the search bar to select first LONG (OVER 20 MINS), which gets you the full length files, then you can add a second filter to rank the results by the date they were uploaded. I have a list of thai flicks, but I dont think they are what you are looking for as they are mostly horror flicks. Start a search (in English) for "BANG RAJAN" - parts 1 and 2 are on YouTube in full length with english subtitles. The other thing is if you find a flm you like, then also click on teh user name who posted it and go to their profile page, as usually there are a load more to be found there.

The Asian Film sites I used went to the wall earlier this year due to difficulty finding hosting, but if I do find one that looks good I will PM you the main site link.

Anyways, back to business.

RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION

The fifth outing for the franchise picks up where the last left off, with Alice and her friends fighting to save the ship load of survivors found off the LA coast. They fail, and Alice awakes once more in an Unbrella Corporation test facility, from which she must escape with the help of some outsiders sent to get her.

And that is it plotwise. Really.

What we have therefore is a 1hr20m string of fist and gunfights, some chases, and an ensemble cast of old characters who reappear thanks to some tissue thin plot reasons, mainly they have been cloned. Every fight, despite being spectacular in some cases, flogs to death the 3D objects flying "out" of the screen shots and slo-mo gun time shots to utter and complete death - so much so by the mid point of the film I was gettng sick of seeing it. The acting is so wooden they could have replaced the cast with a pallet of 2by4s from B&Q, and even the music score is just dull or annoying.

I love the RE films, but after watching this I am happy to read that they intend only making one more to end the series. Its like one of those old deceptive box covers in a video shop for a B movie.... the cover looks great, but the actual product is utter toss.

Worth a watch for fans of the genre or RE franchise, otherwise avoid. Its only a keeper as I collect the series and leaving this one out will be daft as it will leave holes.

One cheer for style, two thbbbbbts for making a total hash of an easy job
