Im a big fan of the American classic horror writer H P Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos tales, and so looked forward with anticipation to the latest release of a film version of one of his longer works by a fan group The HP Lovecraft Historical Society. Their last release was a 1920s style silent movie version of his greatest work The Call of Cthulhu, and was unversally recognised as a wholehearted success. And this latest, filmed in the style of a classic black and white 40s horror matinee movie is equally as excellent and a joy to watch.
When extensve floods wash up strange crab like alien bodies in the rivers of Vermont Professor Wilmarth of the Miskatonic University sets out to investgate. What he finds lurking in the woods and caves of backwater Vermont is much worse....an alien conspiracy by a hidden race workng in conjunction with cultists to bring back The Old Ones from their eternal sleep. Can Wilmarth save the day and stop this happening?.......
Considerng this is a "fan flick" and filmed on a titchy budget the whole look and feel of the film, whch uses the old 40s stykle hi contrast black and white, is a beauty to behold. The acting is excellent considering its done by amateurs and has the lovely 40s dahn daaaahhhh! feel about it, and the attention to detail in props and sets is top mark.
An excellent addtion to the HPLHS film collection and well worth a download IMHO. You can find copies at the usual places. Hopefully Guillermo De Toro has a copy now and is kicking himself for allowing the dumbasses in Hollydud to shelve his proposed film version of another of HPs classic tales the Antarctic set horror story At The Mountains of Madness.
Three cheers and a hearty well done to the HPLHS.
You can find this and the Call of Cthulhu at veehd.
