THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS

Im a big fan of the American classic horror writer H P Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos tales, and so looked forward with anticipation to the latest release of a film version of one of his longer works by a fan group The HP Lovecraft Historical Society. Their last release was a 1920s style silent movie version of his greatest work The Call of Cthulhu, and was unversally recognised as a wholehearted success. And this latest, filmed in the style of a classic black and white 40s horror matinee movie is equally as excellent and a joy to watch.

When extensve floods wash up strange crab like alien bodies in the rivers of Vermont Professor Wilmarth of the Miskatonic University sets out to investgate. What he finds lurking in the woods and caves of backwater Vermont is much worse....an alien conspiracy by a hidden race workng in conjunction with cultists to bring back The Old Ones from their eternal sleep. Can Wilmarth save the day and stop this happening?.......

Considerng this is a "fan flick" and filmed on a titchy budget the whole look and feel of the film, whch uses the old 40s stykle hi contrast black and white, is a beauty to behold. The acting is excellent considering its done by amateurs and has the lovely 40s dahn daaaahhhh! feel about it, and the attention to detail in props and sets is top mark.

An excellent addtion to the HPLHS film collection and well worth a download IMHO. You can find copies at the usual places. Hopefully Guillermo De Toro has a copy now and is kicking himself for allowing the dumbasses in Hollydud to shelve his proposed film version of another of HPs classic tales the Antarctic set horror story At The Mountains of Madness.

Three cheers and a hearty well done to the HPLHS.

You can find this and the Call of Cthulhu at veehd.

"Due Date"

I don't know how I missed this one before but I recorded it on HBO last week and we just watched it. Both my wife and me were in stitches most of the way through and at points we almost fell off the couch laughing. If you don't find this movie funny you have no sense of humo(u)r.

J EDGAR

Clint Eastwood directed biopic of the life and crimes/times of Americas arguably most famous lawman J Edgar Hoover. It focusses primarily on the early years of the FBI from its original formation and reds under the bed Communist busting activties through to the Lindbergh kidnapping and is told in retrospect as Hover dictates his memoirs to an agent. Along the way it dances around J Edgars closet homosexuality and even throws in a sneaky reference to his supposed predeliction for wearing a dress in private, and also hints here and there at his ugly habits of blackmailing presidents and politcians he had issues with and keeping secret blackmail files on them.

Its got mixed reviews, and lke some of them I agree that some of the back and forward transitions are sloppily done and muddy the flow of the film. But at the end of the day I found it a fascinating watch all the same, and not as slow as some reviewers said it was. DeCaprio is excellent as usual and seems to have hit his stride acting wise, adding depth to the character and skirting away from making the easy move of turning Hoover into a two dimensional corrupt villain with a badge.

Out and about in lovely crisp DVDRIP formats. Its a three cheers, but not a keeper as the space on the HD is limited, and there are some corkers due out soon.

UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

As with JONAH HEX this is a flick I have been waiting for, and just like HEX it fails, fails, fails.

And why?

Because the dickwads in Hollydud and their brain dead jock test audences obviously took a film around 1hr 40 or more, and cos the drunk jocks couldnt cope with the plot, they just cut it all out and left in the fight scenes and 3D special effects.

It is, (without the 10 minute end credits) just 1 hour and 17 minutes long.

Yes..... 77 minutes.

So....what you are left with is a very hot Kate Beckinsale dressed iin her Selene leather one piece kcking, stabbng and slashing her way through series of opponents and a paper thin tissue of a plotline stringng the fights together. What a feckng mess.....seriously heads should roll for this.

Its all over the net - look for the BDRIP format one and do do do download it and dont dont dont buy a copy and pay the whoremongers who ruined this film and the franchise one red cent.

Watched it last night and it was over before it really started!

Immortals is also out on BDRIP without the Chinese subs now, that one was a little better.

CORIOLANUS

Ralph Fiennes marks his directorial debut by bringing one of Shakespeares most blood and thunder filled tragedies to the big screen, shifting the setting from ancient Rome to a modern day setting more akin to the Balkans conflicts. The story, steeped in themes of family, loyalty, patriotism and betrayal concerns the stellar rise and fall of Coriolanus, war hero and senator who is dealt a low blow by his fellow patricians and expelled from Rome at the hands of the mob. In revenge Coriolanus turns to his nemesis, the barbarian leader Tullus and his Volscan horde, who then march on Rome to wreak revenge.

The setting is similar in feel to ROMEO + JULIET, Ian McKellan's RICHARD III or Anthony Hopkins' TITUS, a sort of hyper-real modern day setting with narration added via newsfeeds and papers as the action shifts between battlefield and board room. The imagery is simply stunning, the acton kinetic, and the acting is top notch care of an A list cast. Its a masterpiece of Shakespeare cinema from start to end, with Fiennes and Butler, Cox and all the rest lending the powerful and lyrical script a metric f ton of passion. You can tell it works as the imagery and modern setting only serves to show that the words supporting it remain somehow still relevant in the modern day, and are stirring and moving as the year they were written and first performed. It grabs you by the heart, then by the balls, then breaks both over a bitter anvil.

Now....for the bad news. At the moment the R5 copies doing the rounds use a poor quality soundtrack source, and as Shakespeare is all about the words it sort of screws the whole shebang up. So, while I highly recommend this to all lovers of the bard, at the moment Id recc you sit it out and wait for a proper DVDRIP or BDRIP to come out. While you are waiting you could always swing by VeeHD and check out TITUS or RICHARD III.

Anyway.....a solid gold three cheers keeper.

INKUBUS

sometimes its sad to see a flick like this....its a damn sure sign that Robert "Freddy Kruger" Eglund has a crappy accountant and manager team, as he has to stoop to making crocks like this one.

Watching this is like taking a time machine back to the days of VCR top loaders and video nasties.....crappy effects, arse acting, and cheep cheep productions, shop dummy decapitated heads, tomato ketchup gore.....its all there.

Utter cackola.

Its a shame as the basic scipt plot - a serial killer who is in fact a demon - was a good one. Shame its ended up as one of the crappiest flms Ive seen for a good while.

Avoid.
