THE SORCEROR AND THE WHITE SNAKE

Jet Li gets back to his kung fu fantasy roots in this lovely slice of hi fantasy wu jia madness. A humble herb picker falls in love with a white snake demon lass only to find their happy lfe rudely disrupted by a self righteous and nosy local demon dispelling bunch of monks. One of them gets bitten and infected by a bat demon, and on his transformation falls in love with the green snake demon. The abbott, played b Jet Li, is having none of this and so sets out to send em all to hell......

Lovely lush eye candy on a ZU WARRIORS level, great wire fu, eye popping CGI, and a nice lass friendly love story plotline....you could even watch it with the kids. Nothing too demanding plotwise, so nice eye candy to keep the brain amused. It gets a bit soppy in bits but the whizz bang fights and ultra lush CGI settngs make up for that.

Out and about in lovely DVDRIPS at all the usual places, includng a hard subbed copy at veehd.

A solid three cheers keeper.

Russian flicks do take a while to get out onto the international market sometimes, and one I have been waiting for for a good while is TSAR, a big budget bio flick of the mad, bad and very very dangerous to know Ivan The Terrible.

Ivan, first Tsar of all the Russias. had a bit of a messed up childhood so it was no wonder he turned out mad as a weasle, and when he came to power spent his time in power getting hs own back on the boyars that made his childhood a blood soaked misery. The film starts from his coronation, and follows his reign through its early promising period of nation bulding to its grand guignol blood spattered end in a reign of terror at the hands of his secret police. The film focusses on his relationship with the head of the Orthodox faith, his childhood friend, who gradually comes to see that Ivan is less a savior than a psychotic cruel tyrant. When he and the church stand up to Ivan he sets his wolfsheads the Okrana on them, thus carving his name into history as one of its cruelist tyrants.

Its great stuff, epic and well acted by all the leads. The attention to detail is minute, and the costumes, cinematography and scenery beautiful and lush, in places reminding me of Kurosawa's classic take on King Lear RAN.

Epic historical dramas are what the Russians do best, and this one is a corker from start to finish.

Lovely hi rez subbed versions are out and about, but I got mine care of a two part download at veehd.com.

Solid gold keeper from the opening credits to the last scene.

another couple to keep a weather eye out for

First up is Clint Eastwoods biopic of J Edgar Hoover J EDGAR. Lionardo DeCaprio plays the (IMHO) loathsome cross dressng blackmailer himself, with a great supporting cast and its writen by the same bloke that wrote the biopic MILK about Harvey Milk....which was a quality flick. Its a fascinating watch....

and then bringing Christmas way down into the gutter is the gross out stoner comedy A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR CHRISTMAS which I cant wait to see in its full orrible glory....looks hilarious from the pre-release publicity shorts I've seen. Rips heavily on the chrstmas flick genre and brings Neil Patrck Harris back from the dead.....

COWBOYS AND ALIENS

Craig Daniel does his tough as nuts Bond bit n this lovely slice of western meets alien invasion crossover eye bubblegum.

Jed wakes up n the desert with a wound in his side, a strange metal bracelet attached to his left arm, and no memory of where or who he is. After relieveng a pack of bounty hunters of their guns and clothes he staggers into the run down town of Absoluton that is run by a corrupt cattle baron, only to find he is a wanted man. Jed is stll tryng to find out who he is when the skies light up and all hell breaks loose care of some very nasty aliens who are here to steal gold and take no prisoners......

Its good stuff, with some spiffy CGI effects and orrible alien invaders up aganst a cast of various townspeople, indians and bandidos. Its full on blockbuster bubblegum and makes as much sense as a thai political party manifesto, but it does what it says on the tn and keeps your eyes and brain engaged for 2 hrs. The actors all ham it up in their various roles but its done wth fun in mind so works nicely.

Out and about in lovely DVDRIP format at all the usual places. A solid three cheers keeper.

I'm catching up on the film downloads as things are a bit quiet on the work front and I've been watching a lot of TV series recently.

The Drummond Will
Red State
The River Murders
Unknown
The Next Three Days

all lined up for download (speed veeeerrry slow just now).

No sign of Tinker, Tailor etc. yet?

I love the comic book super hero films - watched the Green Hornet the other day (or rather tried to), and it was awful. Nice car, but terrible attempt at humour and below average acting. Struggled through about 30 minutes of it.

Agree with that Dtaii Maii... I very rarely turn a film off before it's finished but here was one of those. Had a lot of potential but was utter shite really IMO.

Just watched an older one from the late nineties (I think) and if you haven't watched it I can't recommend it enough....

Boondock Saints two brothers find their calling in life - to pop off all the bad guys in the world one by one.

Fantastic film

Yes, that's happened to me a few times. I have registered with VeeHD (doesn't take long), and when I get that message, I simply log on and start the process again - it invariably runs smoothly then.
If you really don't want to register, you'll just have to leave it until later.

I've been using Torrentz.eu quite a bit lately - very useful search engine for pretty much anything.
