T,I.G.R.
O.K. Lung Per, then what tag would you apply to these posts? Whatever you call it I'm quite surprised no-one else has noticed or cares about how these posts reflect on HHAD, and each of us by association.
I've re-read what i wrote and i can't see what your gripe is? I don't think i've stereotyped them, or wrote anything racist.
So are you reading a different forum, or just making generalised statement about everybodys comment on this thread.
As mentioned previously as i work amongst them i have found them very well mannered and friendly, but they have their bad apples like any other country.

But if this thread was about people from Pakistan or India, then some of the comments would be racist, on the grounds that their skin is a different color?

It seems to me dark skinned people have got light skinned people just where they want them, thanks to the PC brigade.

[quote="sandman67"]Ok...ribbing aside, I do like Russians. I dated one for a long long time in the UK, I spent a long time drinking in some Russian clubs roudn Old Street in London (including a very dodgy one run by an ex Spesnas guy who was a total diamond once he got to know you and you were "in")

What was a member of HMSS doing cavorting with Ruusians?

I had an ex girlfriend who was a Russian (from near Samara) and she liked to drink in Edigs bar as he was sort of a big brother figure to her. I like drinking with Russians as they like to drink and talk cabbages and kings, and it gave me a chance to try out my very poor Russian. Edig was a useful bloke to know  and once you were "in" you were his mate, and he looked after his mates very well.

I also love borsht and latke (potato cakes). Russian bottled and draft beer like Baltika is pretty good stuff too.

This was all after I left HM Govt in 2001 and was working in the private sector anyway.

Edigs club, Samara, Moscow and St Petersburg are where I learned about what constitutes a Russian "HiSo".

Arcadian wrote:The old saying prevails, there are good and bad in all nationalities, but, in my little corner of North Africa the Russians are perceived to be rude, arrogant, tight-fisted, and non-queuing who pile their plates at the buffet then leave much of it to go to waste. This doesn`t go down well with poorly paid waiters struggling to feed their families. God help HH if mass Russian tourism arrives.

I agree with Arcadian. Good and bad in all nationalities. With my experience with the Russians they are an unhappy race. In the hotel which I was unfortunate to stay at in Thailand, they were just liked decribed above. Huge plate fulls of food from the buffet..all left half eaten, no table manners...push into the lift without a thought for people in front. Having said that some Brits can be like that too..not me of course! I hate these greedy people at buffets, yes the Thai's would look down on this I would imagine.
I think however, they are happier when they have a few shots of vodka inside them :rasta:

Well actually I have :|

I did not see much waste though :P

Sir...I do not mind people eating and putting food on their plates...as long as they do not take more food than they can eat!

I hate seeing waste on plates. When we were children we were taught to take a little then go back for another serving if needed.

Nereus is quite accurate really with this.

For example, if you find yourself at one of those Thai style open-air restaurant buffets where you pay like 99 baht for all you can eat and cook it in the middle of the table sort of places, then usually the rule is (and they have it written up somewhere) that you will be charged for each piece of meat you take but don't eat and it's around 5 baht a piece or thereabouts. This is done precisely for the reason to discourage the waste which shamelessly occurs otherwise.

These type of restaurants are super popular in general and the profit margins are slim, hence the restaurants are often pretty big.

I have wondered where this overt tendency to waste food on a unnecessarily large level comes from and can only guess that it's some sort of image/face/status related thing which says something to others, although I hesitate to speculate what exactly even if suspicions are abound.

...and the master of this and similar are the Singaporeans! They have a word - kaisu - which translates to 'the fear of missing out' and it's the most ugly trait you can imagine IMO. It's prevalent across all classes of the population and you will experience it everywhere...

- Hotel buffet lunches...people rush to the more exotic food section and pile up their plates leaving little or none for others
- Rushing onto trains before people on the train have a chance to get out
- Continuing to wave down buses at the bus stop even when buses have indicated to pull in and are slowing down
- Complete bun-fights at shopping sales
- Queueing for anything that is free, including give aways at McDonalds, once where a full on argument had broken out
- I have experienced being physically pushed in the back to move me forward in a queue because I wasn't quick enough to move forward

...don't get me started...too late...arrgggggghhh :cuss:

Sorry..

You are accusing the Russians of being greedy, and then trying to say that the Thais would not do something like that! Like you, I was bought up to respect other people and have manners, especially table manners---absolutely something that most Thais do not have, especially when something "free" is on offer. It is nothing to do with waste, as they will take any leftovers with them.

The post by kalbow equally applies to Thais.

Have to say I agree with the above post. The amount of times I have seen Thai's slipping plate loads of food into plastic bags then putting it into their handbag is ... well... everytime I have eaten at a 99 baht buffet.
