If it comes down to the real crunch I guess I could survive being a rent geriatric. After all living in Isaan you learn to eat anything. Have to swallow more than my pride though.

Rod any jobs going at your place? (Seen the training video c/o BB) Will I need a work permit?

We are seriously considering a move back to Florida. If I can sell my investments here at break even (to what they cost me) we may just do that. Because of the crash homes there are 30 to 50% less now than when we sold ours in 2004. The wife would have no problem finding a job making at least half of what my retirement income is and my former employer would provide affordable subsidized retiree health insurance that works in Florida, but not here... so going back is looking better and better.

Besides, I can play golf there for $20 to $40 per round (with cart) depending on the season. :D
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I shop in Tesco's, do I need that bottle of HP Sauce at 123B, do I need that jar of marmalade at 140B, indeed to I need a pack of English bangers at six quid, not really one of the things I like about Thailand is the food, so lets stick with Thai food.
Good post and good points, especially this one. The truth is that it is relatively easy to live on a lot less (moving out of a tourist town would be a start). However the problem is that immigration and the government do not think that foreigners should have that option, hence the inflexible and ever increasing visa requirements.
This is a very good point; if I was out of work for a length of time, which could happen very easily in the present economic climate, I could live in the partners village for very little, but there isn't really a completely legal way of doing this.

Hey HHF

Whoa. The forum would miss you. Maybe a dozen of us would club together and buy your palace from you

Seriously I think many will be thinking the same. Standard of living is important the older you get but at the same time you need to be free and devoid of Thai links to jump back or move on. I feel sorry for those who are rooted to Thailand and have Thai wives and families to support who would not be able to settle overseas

You can buy food and clothes now alot cheaper in the UK. It's swings and roundabouts eating out cheaper thailand. cars on balance cheaper UK. IT equipment seems cheaper UK. transport cheaper Thailand. electric, gas water cheaper thailand. The ride same all over the world in the long run

Yes the 50 bht to 1 pound at the moment is very poor, I am coming out mid march for 4 weeks and this will have a bearing on where I eat, drink and to a degree how often I eat out. In the past when it has been 65+ to 1 pound I,ve lived like a millionaire when I have visited.
Today though in the UK I think I can honestly say that it looks like only the second day in the past 10 weeks where we will have sun for the whole day even though there was a sharp frost and the day temp may just kiss between 5 and 8 degrees.
If you are on a fixed income you are hard done buy for the foreseeable future, but some times no matter how bad it is in LOS it is just as bad in your own home country, job insecurity, inflation etc.

Just done a transfer at 48.8 to cover my daughters visit next month. If the pound drops and there is any residue it will go back.

maybe you should be pointing a finger at cameron & the tories too :?

the current lot are apparently that bad that an alternative government should be a nailed on certainty :|
so why is it that not many people seem to think the tories are that alternative?

probably because they'll more likely be just as ineffective in government as the current mob, hence better the devil you know.
a possible hung parliament is the reason there is uncertainty in the money markets & why the pound has dipped.

a tory 16 point lead practically wiped out in such a short time is quite amazing, considering how reviled this government seems to be.

coco the clown leading the monster raving loony party should have been able to comfortably depose this government with the right policies.
says a lot about the tories & cameron don't you think?? :?
