Rick Stein in Hua Hin

Post by Randy Cornhole »

I have just watched Rick Stein's Far Eastern odyssey (part three) on the BBC.

Tonight was the third part, and the sweating lump flew into Bangkok and proceeded to sample the street food. Which is really the same as most other street food in Thailand to be honest.

He then went onto Hua Hin would you believe! where he ate in one of the fishing pier restaurants. He then went on to lament the loss of street food vendors in the night market. His interpreter said that it was now considered by locals as a pure tourist area and as a result mostly clothes and nick knacks were sold. Locals apparently prefer to eat in the large supermarkets. Really...

Then it was a train to Phuket... bla bla bla

I really enjoyed watching all the Thai food being cooked, it took me right back. Happy days...

Maybe they referred to a road train. They have that in the outbacks down under. :thumb:

I saw it too Randy. The big lump has filmed in Hua Hin before, so I guessed he was going to go back in this series. Dont know when he was there, but it looked way low season, there was only about 3 people in the whole of the night market.

Seems he only learned one word of Thia the whole time he was in the country, and he claims to have been lots of times before. He knew what goong is, but completely ignored the lady who was trying to get him to achnowledge that her tom yum goong was aloi maak maak. In the words of David Cameron, twat.

He was also insisting on calling the old town Wah Hin. Odd pronunciation, I know we've had threads about this before but I dont remember ever hearing anyone call the place Wah Hin.

I saw it too.

Nice of him to point out that he didn't think he'd be returning to Wah Hin for a while as the night market was a bit touristy, not enough food stalls.

Jim, I here it called Wah Hin all the time.

I saw it too...

Agree with him about the night market...it used to be mainly food when it first started.

He was quite positive about the meal he had on the pier - one of Hua Hin's remaining features that area..

Waa Hin - hopeless - he really needs to try harder.

I did meet some people that actualy lived in Hua Hin and called Khao Takiab 'Khaowakia'

I didn`t see this programme but I do like his previous series particularly travelling through France, however, he is a bit of a hypocrit when he bangs on about French restaurants serving good cheap food when his Cornish restaurants are way beyond the means of ordinary folk. He has cashed in on the "Kensington on holiday" crowd in North Cornwall

I don't see that as a reason to say you wouldn't return though, there is food everywhere you look in Waaaaaaaaah Hin.

Khaowakia!

He was filmed on one of the pier restaurants about 10 years ago and also in the morning market.

I thought that his stint in Hua Hin was a bit short this time and he still hasn't learnt any of the lingo, despite coming to Thailand many times.

Was going to record this episode but my damned Sky HD+ box packed up, so had to swap for the old sky box to watch it. Damn that Murdoch!!!.
I don't know if I would fancy that train journey from BKK to HH, 4 hours in a sweat box. :(

Arcadian is right , he has Padstow sown up with a restaurant, fish and chip shop, plus two others and all over priced. When you add in the TV and book rights, I doubt he ever gets behind a stove now.
Still he has done better than Keith Floyd, who was allegedly sacked from his job at a restaurant in a five star Hotel on Phuket this year. Pissed probably.

There was a programme "rough guide" on earlier, showing the Orient Asian express from SP to Bangkok. That is a trip I have promised the wife we will do one year. Good food, leisurely journey, better than arriving via Swampy any day.

He must've been absolutely hammered and sacked himself then considering he owns the thing.

This was reported in a Pattaya paper about a month ago. I think he leased the place, he was broke when he left England, as every venue he opened closed for various reasons.

Don't know about the legend thing.
