Well, according to the Sunday Times, the tally in Samui over the last 8 weeks is:

"At least" five murders

21 robberies

20 violent assualts

14 gun related incidents

In each of the last two years, "at least" five Britons have been killed in Thailand

In a typical year, 60 Brits are killed abroad (60m trips abroad are made), but the bit that staggered me was, "several hundred also go missing"!!!

Now some will go of their own accord, no doubt, but what happens to the rest?

Maybe growing up in London makes you street wise, but I have never flet threatened anywhere in SE Asia and certainly not in Hua Hin, but thinking about it, I subconsciously (I think) don't put myself in a position where I would.

When I was staying at the Grand Hotel a couple of years ago, on more than one occassion, I thought about walking back after a night out, thought it would be nice, but in the end, I always took a tuk-tuk, for what, a 5-10 minute walk?

Good post caller, and excellent advice.

Don't put yourself in a situation you can't handle.
You are a guest, on thai premises, then behave like a guest.
Above all, be polite and don't start any discussions with the typical farang attitude; I'm the expert. I know everything.

One more thing; stop talking about how stupid the thai way of doing things are and stop telling that in farangland everything is so much better.
Why go here with an attitude like that?
Behave and act with a little more humility attitude and follow some basic rules of survival instinct.

Great reply Norseman, in my visits to Thailand over the last 3 years, I stayed in Ao Nang and Koh Lanta the 1st year, while there, I saw very little of sort of bar life that goes on on the rest of Thailand. Ao Nang has a very small section of the town where there are bars, but did not see much of the B/G trade and in Koh Lanta saw very little of it at all, as at that time. other than around the port area, everything was very quite and very laid back.

The next year after arriving in Phuket, it was a real eye opener. Obviously not as bad as Pattaya or Bangkok, was still very full on. Walking around the bars in Bangala Rd with my G/F at night, the constant source of amusement was the punters trying to pull the Thai girls. Most were 50years onwards, past their prime in looks and health, and very rude and abusive with it. It is no wonder that people like that get the shit beaten out of them, and should have no complaints about it when it happens. If those guys were back in Europe and spoke to a girl in a local bar (wherever they are from), I know for a fact that the same fate would await them there.

In HH last year I witnessed the same sort of behaviour one night, where are European guy of about 60 came staggering into a bar that I was in, walked up to on the B/G and tried to get her to go with him. She refused, he was very abusive, and as she turned away from him, he aimed a kick at her. If that had happened in the UK, he would have been severly dealt with before he even got to the door. Luckily enought he left and was not to be seen again. The age group of the people in HH is a lot older than in Patong or Ao Nang, and must admit was very supprised to se it happening, as you would think that people of that age would no how to behave in a respectful manner.

What I have said above is not meant in any reflection to the two stories that have been highlighted in this post or in any way meant as any disrespect to anyone that has met with a violent death in HH.

I am just trying to point out, that although there are a lot of things like this happening at present in Thailand, there are a lot of people who do by their own actions contribute a lot to their own demise, and that does not to always seem to some out in the press that we read.

I think it might be an idea to keep this thread on topic and limit discussion to the latest news about these two terrible incidents, rather than branch out into what other westerners may do over here and what they may deserve as a result.
I know it's nobody's intention to belittle these incidents, but perhaps more general discussion of Western attitudes to the Thais and the reactions they can cause is best dealt with on another thread?

Let's all be careful out there.
If this continues in a rate like what we see now, we have to start a new thread. Don't want to mention the subject/headline.
I feel deeply sad for all the killing and deaths we learn to know these days.

Two 'confess' to backpack murder
Katherine Horton
Katherine Horton was last seen phoning her mother on 1 January
Two local fishermen have confessed to killing British backpacker Katherine Horton, Thai police have said.

Koh Samui police say they arrested two local men, aged 23 and 24, in connection with the death of the 21-year-old student from Cardiff.

They were arrested close to the beach where she was last seen on 1 January and were taken into custody after their boat returned to the island.

A post-mortem examination suggested Miss Horton was raped and badly beaten.

The Reading University student was last seen just hours before on New Year's Day.

Miss Horton, who was due to return home next week after a couple of weeks in Thailand, was with friends on Lamai beach and is reported to have wandered away from them as she spoke to her mother on her mobile phone.

Map showing location in Thailand where the body was found
Katherine's body was found on a beach in Koh Samui

What happened to her between that moment and the discovery of her body is unknown. Her body was found in the bay by a jet ski operator.

Police Major Asawin Khawanmuang told reporters at police headquarters in Bangkok: "The suspects have admitted to raping and killing the British tourist, but we have brought them to Bangkok for DNA testing to be sure."

The fishermen told police they spotted Horton while she was walking alone on a beach talking on her mobile phone and approached her from behind, he said.

He added that the two men admitted to beating Horton with a wooden club, raping her and dragging her into the sea.

At the weekend, police said they had begun to take DNA samples from fishermen working on five boats which were in the area the night she died.

On Saturday a British couple who had found her mobile telephone on the sand returned to the island to assist police.

The Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, had called on investigators to find those responsible for her death as quickly as possible but urged them also to be prudent.

Just got back to UK from Venice. Front page headline in all the local newspapers in Venice this morning read as follows:

"Gondoliere, 26, Muore in Thailandia." (Gondolier, 26, dies in Thailand)

Don't know how his death happened but it seems like the journalistic spotlight is on the Land of Smiles.

A tv station reported today a new rape on Koh Samui.
A 40 year old Swedish woman claimes to be raped by two thai males who threatend her with a knife.
Any of you heard about this?

And these are just the reported ones
I know of a guy who travelled to the kingdom about fifteen years ago - he wasn't the brightest light on the xmas tree, and was mesmerised by the ease of getting laid...

He made half a dozen visits in close order, - and then didn't come back...

He left a third share of a business, a house and bank accounts that wern't touched.

- He's never been heard of since

No news story of course - because he was a bloke, and no body found...
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...
