moja, maybe if they thought there was a danger of you voting with your feet, then they compromised with the normal menu rather than lose the trade.
voting with our feet never came into it - when we arrived there were normal menus on our table and we just ordered from them - no fuss or bother at all!!!

If someone had made a mistake by giving us the normal menu then I am sure the kitchen would soon informed us.

It certainly is very strange why such difference service on one evening?

I now wish I had paid more attention to what the other tables around us were eating! All I know is that the young Thai couple next to us who came in much later in the evening were eating a salad, they were feeding each other which is the only reason I noticed them!!! :P :P

hhfarang, if service was so slow, why did you tip them? You should only tip good service.
There are two answers to that: In most restaurants like that here, a 10% tip is mandatory and added to the bill along with the 7% VAT.

In addition, there were many servers and the food service, as I said was excellent; only the drink service was bad. My wife used to work in restaurants in the U.S. and unless the service is indeed terrible she forces me to leave an additional tip as she says these people work very hard for a little money.

What I don't understand and what my wife will talk to the owner about (she knows them) this week to find out is why we were forced to order from the set menu when others were given the choice of the regular menu. Maybe they forced the set menu on everyone who made a reservation because they knew how much to cook and gave the walk-ins the regular menu, but I intend to find out the answer to that question.

If a restaurant automatically puts on a service charge, 10%-15%, regardless of whether the service is good or not, I will not tip aswell because that is 'a load of bollocks' IMO.

It's rude to expect a customer to tip twice! Greedy, thieving bastards!

We had a reservation as well - there were 7 of us so would not have risked just walking in on Valentine's night

Moja,

What time did your party arrive? The only thing I can think of is that so many people ordered the veal that they ran out and then went back to the regular menu.

As I said, we arrived early at 7:00 p.m. I was just talking to my wife and she said that she noticed that all the tables around us also were given the paper menu with the two choices only.

Now I'm pissed. I really want to find out why we were forced to eat the set menu when others got to order from the regular one as we intended. That would have saved us 2000 baht!

Call them, call them, call them tonight. You won't be able to sleep. It's only 2045 hours so they should still be open. It would piss me off also. Pete

not sure what time the first of our party arrived, we were held up by the traffic as I said before and got there just after 1930.

when I next see the others I will ask them which menu they were offered when they arrived - maybe that will explain things

I am not sure it will not help but two of our party had veal!

The menu confusion would piss me off also, but to maybe help remind you of California HHF, here's what we did.

Normally we don't go to high end restaurants, my wife doesn't enjoy them much (I like some, but get enough through business), but for V day she say's she wants to go to a "fancy restaurant"

Due to procrastination on my part (not planned) (really!) we ended up at Scott's in Costa Mesa, a well known restaurant specializing in seafood, but also known for excellent Beef.

Valet parking (no choice) set me back $5 initially.

We had a 3 course price fixe menu option, or regular menu.

Wife ordered the price fixe menu, calamari, Filet, and creme brulee $60

I ordered the lobster bisque $14 and petrale sole $24 and a side of garlic spinach $7

I had three glasses of wine with dinner at $14 each (this was their lower end wine).

So with the western tip the night (before flowers) was $175+_

Food excellent, but no better than restaurants 1/2 the price, Service supurb, but we're not demanding.

I know income is different HHF, but thought I'd share prices over here at the current time.

I've been a customer many times and can't fault it at all

Coffee in the mornings, light lunches early afternoon or Dinner in the evenings.

The setting is superb and the breeze off the gulf is ideal for a chill out

At night the music is just right. You can still have a conversation

Can't fault the service and food quality at all

I highly recommend it to all and sundry

Echo Richard's comments, one of the best restaurants in town for all round quality, had my kids birthday party there and the staff bent over backwards for us. Excellent place.

Sorry to hear about your issue HHF, from our dealings with the manageress (owner?) there, sure they'll sort it out for you. Decent of them to come on too to address it, just like some other restaurants have done on here too.
