Oh dear Greavsie what have you done?

Just when I thought is was safe to go back in the water.

Was that the Bank of Ayudayha rate or Siam Commercial and how many bottles of Chang difference is there?

Maybe our resident financial guru, rantages, can explain why the Thai Baht is going down the pan.

Watch the Satang and the Baht will take care of itself.

Many thanks for those. What's your favorite? Re Satang is very appropriate on this topic.

GBP v THB

Post by Arcadian »

Blimey, Mr.Plum and I were reprimanded by a moderator for hurling very mild abuse at one another on another thread, nothing like the Guess v Sargeant (very entertaining) current spat.
However I follow the currency trends by asking `Ask` and putting onto my favourites.

About 9 1/2(NINE and a half) years ago (before most arrived) I realized that I was not getting the best from my pension and so for 3 months I withdrew my pension from virtually every ATM /Bank in Hua Hin & Cha Am in 5,000 Bht lumps as close to each other as I could. (I had no computer HHAD did not exist)
I then compared my Barclays Bank statements and found that although the Bank of Ayudayha was slightly further from my home the best exchange rates were from them. I then ditched my Bangkok bank, Siam Commercial, Thai Farmer bank accounts and have banked ever since exclusively with the Bank of Ayudayha.
SJs link proves it was a smart move Bank of Ayudayha are still the best exchange rate for the GBP NINE years later
I did have an achillies heel though my UK bank was Barclays a more extortionate and piss poor customer service Bank you will not find anywhere
I tried every means possible to change banks in the UK but could not do so without returning to the UK and was therefore forced to swallow the 4.5% average charges AND commission on every transaction.
Then I had some luck (I had a heart attack) and I was forced back to the UK for my Health within 24 hours (even before seeing my doctor) I had opened a Nationwide JOINT account with Mrs Sarge (which Barclays steadfastly refused to do) (I had internet banking which Barclays refused without a UK address)
I now have ZERO charges on my transactions from the Nationwide. I now have the best exchange rate from all Thai banks using the Bank of Ayudayha. I have with the help of my sister and BinL the money in my account so that I withdraw about 20th onwards depending on the rate but NEVER NEVER on the 28th 29th or 30th because it always drops wether the trends are up or down. I can check my withdrawal against my Nationwide account and have a REAL (not cyber) rate of exchange within a few hours And guess what I my sister and BinL none of us have a degree in economics just common sense and street smarts
I will listen to anybody (with intelligence) that can come up with a UK bank that will PAY ME to withdraw my money and I will consider a bank in Thailand that can better the bank of Ayudayhas rate of exchange I don’t think what I have devised can be bettered for me and my pension
I am in this happy position due to street smarts and experience by the way

One thing I guarantee Freddie Mac, Fannie May, AIG, Northern Rock, Lehmans Bank, Bradford & Bingly and the Iceland govt and banks are /were up to their tits in economics degrees and we all know where that has got us.

sarge,
The cap fits so wear it - you have found a solution that suits you, but that doesn't mean it will suit everybody, nor that everyone will be able to do the same.

I have to ask something though - in your posting history you have condemned 'ologists and iatrists', as well as economists in this thread, so can you explain why you have such a low opinion of people who studied hard and achieved their respective qualifications? And does this opinion extend to all professionally qualified people? Or should we all have joined the forces do you think?

Now some sense is being written.

Yes Barclay's are crap. Many people have reported Nationwide as being very good for transferring money and catering for ex-pats as a whole.

I think though that is some confusion regarding ATM withdrawals and money transfers.

ATMs connect to a worldwide system and the owning bank can give whatever rate at their ATM that they choose. The rates are updated every 120 minutes or less.

Bank of Ayudayha is usually at rthe top of the GBP list but not always.

The difference between the highest rate and the lowest rate is about 35 Satang for each 100 GBP.

Your issuing (home) bank may add another withdrawal charge which you need to be aware of. You will only see that if you have internet banking or you get your statements sent to you. They acquiring bank (ATM owner cannot tell you. They don't know.

Money transfer is different thing altogether. The sending bank and receiving bank must have an agreed rate that caters for fluctuations that will occur in the time it takes to transfer the money. Organizations like SWIFT and CHAPS dictate those rates. Nearly all banks will add on their percentage and then the greedy bastards add a transfer fee, which is double what they pay and to add insult to injury some even charge a commission set fee. All transaction are a separate entity.

There is no such ting as a cyber rate outside the imagination of internet bankers.

Now back to ATM withdrawals and to put this "discussion" to bed once and for all.

The rates for ATM in Thailand for GBP accounts is right now.

Number 1. Siam City 57.18
Number 2 Ayudhya 57.15
Number 10 TMB 56.81

This means that 100 GBP will get you 5,718 Thai Baht at Siam City and 5,681 Baht at TMB. This is a a difference of 37 Baht. 10,000 GBP would have difference of 370 Baht.

Of course you can never guarantee getting those rates unless you have a hand held and park up outside the ATM all day.

I have just spent a considerable amount of time researching and checking this information for the benefit of all readers so please refrain from arguing unless you have alternative information that conflicts and you have the source of that information.

My information comes from CHAPS (BofE), RTGS (BofE), Nationwide and Bank Bangkok. (And of course the reference web site: http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx

BTW. One thing that has not been mentioned so far is the one off 20 - 30 Baht withdrawal charge that all Thai banks make if you withdraw cash from their till and your account is not at that branch.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Just when I got Ramadam out of the way.
