Thai-Cambodian forces agree to withdraw to 2024 positions at Chong Bok Border

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai made a statement on 8 June that Thai-Cambodian forces had conducted joint border patrols and successfully reduced tensions. Both sides adjusted troop positions to agreed locations from normal 2024 conditions and began land restoration work.

The situation improved through dialogue at all levels. Thailand appreciated Cambodia's military for cooperation in a peaceful resolution. Both countries expect the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting on 14 June to further resolve issues peacefully.

The Defense Ministry praised Thai forces for restraint and urged public caution with information sharing to prevent new conflicts.

Cambodia cuts internet from Thailand as tensions grow after border clash
Tensions between Cambodia and Thailand escalated Friday on the eve of talks on a border dispute as Cambodia cut internet services, stopped airing Thai movies and cancelled boxing bouts involving Thai fighters.

Cambodia also closed the Doung international border crossing point, known as Ban Laem on the Thai side, after Thailand had cut its operating hours there by half. The move left dozens of Thai cargo trucks stranded at the border.

The actions marked a deepening of a bilateral spat after a Cambodian soldier died in a clash on May 28, the latest episode in a long-running dispute over the demarcation of the 800-kilometer (500-mile) Thai-Cambodia border.

The two sides are holding talks Saturday in Phnom Penh at a Joint Boundary Commission meeting. While Cambodia will be represented by a minister, the Thai side is led by a former ambassador.

Cambodia turns to World Court over Thailand border disputes
Cambodia said on Sunday it had asked the International Court of Justice to resolve its border disputes with Thailand, after a flare-up in their long-running row led the Southeast Asian neighbours to mobilise troops on both sides of the border.

A Cambodian soldier was killed in a brief skirmish on May 28 in a confrontation over the 820-km (510-mile) frontier, parts of which are undemarcated and claimed by both nations.

"Cambodia chooses a peaceful resolution based on international law through the ICJ mechanism for solving the border dispute," Prime Minister Hun Manet posted on his Facebook page.

The post showed a picture of Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn holding an envelope that Hun Manet said contained a formal letter to the ICJ in The Hague, often called the World Court.

The Thai Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cambodia's move. Bangkok has previously said it has never recognised the court's jurisdiction and prefers to settle the disputes through bilateral mechanisms.

Talks on border demarcation over the weekend between officials from both countries were inconclusive with both sides pledging to de-escalate tensions and continue dialogue.

Cambodia said in a statement that it had proposed to Thailand the two countries should jointly bring the four dispute areas to the ICJ and that these areas should no longer be included in future bilateral talks on border demarcation.

I see the Thais are now saying that the Cambodians always stip up the border issues when there are big domestic problems at home, to divert attention away from the issues they are getting flak about. I think that is working equally for the Thai Govt. as well.

Another coup on the cards? Things are getting real messy here ...

Thai PM admits leaked audio with Cambodia’s Hun Sen
A leaked recording of a private call between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen has gone viral on social media. During the call, the Thai Prime Minister admitted she is facing domestic pressure from the military, which put her in the hot seat immediately after the audio was leaked.

The recording, which lasts 9 minutes, was leaked in the morning on Wednesday (18 June) and promptly went viral on social media in both Cambodia and Thailand.

Hun Sen confirmed via his Facebook page that the leaked audio was authentic but did not mention how it was leaked. He said the phone conversation took place on 15 June and lasted 17 minutes and 6 seconds. He also noted that it was necessary to record the conversation for the sake of transparency.

Hun Sen remarked that he has shared the audio with approximately 80 individuals, including members of the party’s standing committee, Senate working groups, National Assembly teams, the foreign affairs task force, education and outreach units, border affairs groups, and members of the armed forces.

“A few hours after our conversation, the Thai leader publicly accused the Cambodian leadership of conducting “unprofessional” politics and engaging in political activity via Facebook, an action that contradicts their words,” said Hun Sen.

He also added that he has already prepared to release the entire audio, saying that “If the Thai side wishes to have the full recording, I am prepared to release the 17-minute and 6-second audio in its entirety”.

THAI PM FACES POLITICAL CRISIS AFTER AUDIO LEAK WITH HUN SEN
Thailand’s political landscape has intensified following the release of a private audio conversation between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen on Wednesday. Opposition groups and anti-Thaksin factions have called for the female prime minister’s resignation or parliament dissolution, with some citing concerns about preventing a military coup.

Thailand has had 12 coups since 1932, which averages out to one about every 8 years!

I've been trying to keep up with this - but it certainly doesn't get much exposure on "Western Sites/News Outlets" over the Trump, Israel, Iran, Gaza news...

Things are not exactly looking great are they, but certainly a strange situation with regards to top level relationships. As for Thailand, a look back to the 2010 protests?

This has certainly not been a good year with regards "Global Conflicts" and any and all will influence the politics and actions within North East Asia, the US, the Middle East and UK/Canada to a lesser extent... But that's another subject/Thread!

Thai govt faces political collapse after PM’s leaked phone call scandal
Thailand’s government teetered on the brink of collapse after a leaked audio recording of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra criticising the country’s military provoked the withdrawal of support from a key party in her ruling coalition, amid growing calls for her resignation.

The exit of the conservative Bhumjaithai Party, which holds 69 seats in the 500-member lower house, leaves the Pheu Thai Party-led government controlling just 261 seats in Parliament, as more parties in the coalition held urgent meetings on June 19 to decide whether to join the exodus.

Any further defections could tip the Paetongtarn administration into minority government, and some political analysts have already written her position off as untenable.

...

Pro-military voices had also seized on what they considered to be her overly gentle diplomatic approach to the territorial spat after a Cambodian soldier was killed during a brief exchange of gunfire at a disputed border area between the two countries on May 28, fanning nationalist sentiments on both sides.

Thailand blocks tourists from entering Cambodia as their border tensions soar
Thailand began imposing land border restrictions Monday including blocking tourists heading into Cambodia as the two countries engage in retaliation in their border dispute.

Relations between the countries have deteriorated following an armed confrontation May 28 in which one Cambodian soldier was killed in a relatively small, contested territory. While the two sides have agreed to de-escalate their dispute, they continue to implement or threaten measures that have kept tensions high.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Monday that Thailand will boost screening at land borders and block departing tourists, saying that only students, medical patients and others who need to purchase essential goods would be allowed to enter or leave Thailand.

She said the measures were aimed at blocking people heading toward Cambodia’s lucrative casinos, but it appeared that all tourists would be blocked.

The Thai army said in a statement later Monday that it had implemented the measures at every land border checkpoint between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces, and that it was stopping all crossings except for people with essential needs.

Good article on the current state of these two countries, which are remarkably similar politially, for anyone that gives a hoot ...

Dynastic Politics and Governance Crisis in Southeast Asia: The Case of Thailand and Cambodia

Across Southeast Asia, the resurgence of political dynasties is casting a long shadow over democratic governance. In both Thailand and Cambodia, power is no longer passed through meritocratic processes or competitive institutions, but rather inherited within dominant families. The Shinawatra family in Thailand and the Hun family in Cambodia have each entrenched themselves at the helm of national politics, sidelining experience, maturity, and leadership in favor of lineage and loyalty. This concentration of power raises serious ethical and institutional concerns—not only for the internal stability of each country, but also for the fragile relationship between the two.

...

The rise of Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Hun Manet highlights a broader regional trend: the institutionalization of political dynasties that bypass the meritocratic principles essential to effective governance. In both countries, the separation between public service and private interest has grown dangerously thin.

When leadership is inherited rather than earned, governance risks becoming erratic and symbolic, with real decision-making power retained by unelected family patriarchs. This undermines accountability and stifles reform. In Cambodia, Hun Sen remains the true center of power; in Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra’s shadow looms large over his daughter’s premiership.
